Cardinals Fall in Four Sets Against Gettysburg

WASHINGTON, D.C.  — The Catholic volleyball team looked to pick up a win in a non-conference match against Gettysburg on Wednesday night. Despite taking the third set, the Cardinals were unable to bounce back after falling behind 2-0, and fell to the Bullets 3-1.

After falling behind 22-17 in the opening set, the Cardinals went on a 7-2 to pull the set back even at 24. Vivian O'Brien and Erin Faughnan started the run off with kills and Anna Maria Carella added an ace to tie the set. The Bullets took the last two points of the set to gain a 1-0 lead.

Gettysburg had a lot of success offensively in the second set, hitting a match high .385 to take the set 25-18. This allowed the Bullets to take a 2-0 lead in the match, although Catholic had its highest hitting percentage in a set, hitting .286 with 12 kills.

The Cardinals locked in defensively in the third set, holding the Bullets to just a .031 hit percentage. Catholic added 12 more kills and used a 7-1 run late in the set to take a commanding 23-12 lead. Julia Turchiano and O'Brien picked up a kill during the run and Turchiano added another kill to set up a set point for Catholic. Juliette Cummings picked up the decisive kill for the Cardinals in the set to make it a 2-1 match.

The Bullets held the Cardinals to a .036 hit percentage in the fourth set to secure the victory, 25-18. The loss dropped Catholic to 4-8 on the season.

Turchiano led the Cardinals in kills for the first time this season as the freshman finished with 12. Faughnan was behind her with 10 and Julia Raab recorded nine. Carella was the leader for the team in assists with a season-high 22, while also adding four aces. Kate Berra totaled 19 aces and also recorded her third double-double of the season with 10 digs.

Alejandra Garcia led Catholic in digs with 18. Raab and Caroline Welsh each tallied two blocks in the game for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals next match will once again be at home on Friday, September 26 at 6 pm against Lynchburg.
