ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — The Catholic men's tennis team added another win to the record in the fall season on Sunday afternoon with a 7-0 victory over Elizabethtown. The Cardinals are off to a 4-0 start for the third consecutive season.
The Cardinals swept the three doubles matches to take the first point of the match.
Henry Ogden and
Paulo Emanuelli wrapped up first in the number three spot, taking the set six games to one.
Ian Arenas and
Lorenzo Neri played in the number two slot and came away with a 6-2 victory.
Diego Romo and
James Earwood also won by a score of 6-2 in their set in the number one spot to complete the doubles sweep.
Neri played in the most compelling of the singles matches in the top spot and came away with a victory after dropping a well-played first set, 7-6. He bounced back by taking the second set 6-2 before heading into a tiebreak in the decisive third set. Neri took the lead early in the tiebreaker and was able to hold on to his advantage throughout the later stages to win the set 10-8 and win the match. His win earned the Cardinals the 7-0 sweep of the Blue Jays.
Earwood completed his match first in singles in the third spot, taking the match in two sets, 6-2 and 6-1. Arenas was next, playing in the number two spot, winning 6-1 and 6-3 to pick up his second win of the day. The match was clinched by
Flynn Hollinger in the number five slot, winning comfortably 6-1 and 6-0.
Jake Hershey also earned a win in two sets, taking all 12 of the games he played.
Romo was pushed all the way until the end in his first set but kept his composure and took the extra game to win 7-6. He then completed the match in the second set, taking it six games to three.
Catholic's next match will be against Frostburg on October 11 at home. They will also be at the ITA Regionals next weekend.
