CHESTERTOWN, Md. — The 18th-ranked Catholic men's soccer team went back on the road to take on Washington College, trying to extend its unbeaten streak to five to start the season. The contest was back-and-forth throughout with multiple lead changes and despite grabbing a second half lead, the Cardinals finished with a second straight draw against the Shoremen, 2-2.
The first goal of the match came in the opening five minutes on the first shot of the game for the Shoremen. Tucker Sprano delivered a pass to Simone Perin, who guided a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal to give Washington College a 1-0 advantage.
The Cardinals found an equalizing goal 24 minutes into the half after a free kick gave Catholic a great opportunity to score.
Ben Zimmer connected with
Ellington Andrews in the center of the box and Andrews found the back of the net to pull things even at one.
After the game went into halftime all squared at one, Catholic gained its first lead of the match early in the second half as Zimmer once again set up one of his teammates with a chance to score.
Carson Shamoo took the Zimmer pass and placed a shot in the bottom left corner just over seven minutes into the half to take the lead 2-1.
A critical foul from Catholic inside the penalty area gave an opportunity to Washington College to try and tie things back up with a penalty kick. Tshazi Kamau was called on for the Shoremen to try and convert and he was successful on the penalty, tying the game back up at two with 30 minutes remaining in regulation.
Neither team found the back of the net for the remainder of the game and it came to close as a 2-2 draw. The Cardinals are now 3-0-2 on the season with the result.
Andrews notched the first goal of his collegiate career in the half and became the eighth different goal scored Catholic in the early stages of the season. Shamoo now has two goals on the year and became the fourth player to record multiple goals on the season.
Zimmer recorded his first two assists of the season, which now leads the team. He has seven for his career and has matched a career-high in a season as he recorded two as a freshman and a junior as well. It was the first multi-assist game of his career.
Owen Allegro made one save in the draw and played the full 90 minutes in goal for the fourth time this season. Andrews,
Corey Magro and
Charlie Paparella also played the full 90 minutes in the draw.
The Cardinals return home this weekend to take on Stockton on Saturday, September 20 at Carlini Field. Kickoff is set for 1 pm.
