WASHINGTON, D.C. — The 19th-ranked Catholic men's soccer team returned home to Carlini Field on Saturday afternoon as they welcomed in Washington & Lee, trying to remain unbeaten on the season. The Cardinals overcame a 1-0 deficit in the first half to earn a draw against the Generals to move to 3-0-1 this season.
The first opportunity of the game was created by the Generals after a penalty was won after a foul was committed inside the 18-yard box by the Cardinals. Willy Hall stepped up to the spot and placed his shot perfectly past the dive of
Owen Allegro in the bottom right corner of the goal to put W&L on top 1-0, just under 15 minutes into the match.
Catholic would not take long to answer the goal in the opening half as nine minutes later
Holden Woodings received a pass inside the penalty area from
Azaria Tewodros and Woodings guided a shot into the back of the net to tie the score back up at one. It was Woodings' second goal of the season.
The game went into the half all knotted up at one. The Cardinals created several chances to take the lead early in the second half but none of them found the back of the net. Allegro made a key save off of a corner, snagging the ball off the goal line to make sure the match stayed tied. Neither team found a goal in the second half and the match finished as a draw.
Woodings' goal was the 17th of his career at Catholic to bring him into a tie for 10th place in DIII program history in career goals. Tewodros picked up his first assist of the season on the goal.
Allegro made two saves in the match and played the full 90 minutes in goal.
Graham Leary,
Ellington Andrews,
Corey Magro and
Charlie Paparella all played the full 90 for Catholic in the draw.
The Cardinals next match is on the road against Washington College on Tuesday, September 16. The match will kickoff at 7 pm at Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium.
