COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Catholic football team went on the road for the first time this season to take on Capital, looking to build off its thrilling win from week one. A close game at halftime was taken over in the third quarter by the Comets as they outscored the Cardinals 20-0 in the quarter to take a two score lead that led to a 36-20 win for Capital.
The Cardinals offense opened up the game with a bang as they went on a 10 play 75 yard touchdown drive, missing the extra point to take a 6-0 lead.
Daequan Harvin was effective on the drive, rushing for 39 yards on five straight carries to open the drive.
Brady McBride completed all three of his throws and capped off the drive by finding
Nole Henry in the end zone to take the lead early.
Catholic found itself trailing after a safety and a Capital touchdown that made the score 9-6. McBride on the offense was able to find the end zone early in the second quarter after the defense forced a three and out to set up a short field. McBride found
Cade Chrebet for a 13-yard reception to put the Cardinals into the red zone and they cashed in on second and goal at the three on a touchdown run from
Omari Owes, his first of the season.
The Comets answered with a touchdown to regain the lead but the Cardinals marched back down the field to take the lead back 20-16. McBride ripped off the longest run of his career on a keeper up the middle, taking it 57 yards to the house for his first career rushing touchdown with 6:32 left in the half. The Catholic defense allowed just one more first down in the quarter and Catholic took a 20-16 lead into the locker room.
After punting on the first drive of the half, Capital's offense went on a roll, putting together three straight touchdown drives, two of which came off Catholic turnovers to take control of the game with a 16 point advantage. The Cardinals defense forced three punts in the fourth quarter but the Comets kept them out of the end zone to close out a 36-20 win.
Harvin put together another solid game on the ground for Catholic with 15 carries for 83 yards (5.5 Y/R) and also caught 2 passes for 32 yards. McBride finished with 109 yards through the air, 88 on the ground and a pair of touchdowns.
Hayden Kennedy led the Cardinals in receiving with three catches for 37 yards.
Evan Chromy led the Cardinals in tackles with seven followed by
Ryan Creston and
Lawson Haylock who each tallied six.
Michael Hopkins recorded the lone sack of the afternoon for Catholic.
The Cardinals will remain on the road next week when they take on Franklin & Marshall in week three. Kickoff is set for 1 pm at Shadek Stadium.
