Cardinals Book Trip to Landmark Finals for 17th Straight Season

WASHINGTON, D.C. - A total team effort sent Catholic past Juniata, 17-3, to extend its streak of Landmark Conference Championship appearances to 17. The Cardinals will travel to Pennsylvania to take on the top-seeded Scranton Royals at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Catholic gave the Eagles fits, allowing just nine successful clears on 23 tries while forcing the Eagles into 26 turnovers on Thursday afternoon. The Cardinals won 17 draw controls to Juniata's six in the win. Six different players scored two goals for Catholic as 11 Cardinals found the back of the net.

Leading just 3-2 with 2:59 to play in the opening quarter, Catholic scored three goals in the final 2:27 to build a 6-2 lead after the first. Henley Bredemann, Maggie Traynor, Brigid Brown, Ellie Verrill, Caroline Regan, and Tori Wilsey made it six different goal scorers in the first 15 minutes. Bredemann added two first-quarter assists while Madeline Kelly, Maddie McDevitt, and Jessie Lee all added assists.

A dominant defensive second quarter saw Catholic build the halftime lead to 10-2 as Juniata was held without a shot on target for the period. Lee got on the board with her 23rd goal of the season to make it 7-2 before Verrill put home her second goal on a nice find from Izzy Fiore. Kelly and Lindsay Sawyer followed with goals in the final five minutes of the half.

The scoring run eventually extended to 14 unanswered goals late into the fourth before Juniata added a final goal late from Peyton Goodrich. McDevitt, Fiore, Maggie Traynor, and Bredemann all scored in the third quarter as the lead built to 15-2. Lee and Brown added their second goals respectively in the fourth to put things away.

The Cardinals were swarming defensively, led by five caused turnovers from Clare Martin and three from Grace Button. McDevitt and Lauren Bendo each caused a pair of turnovers while Wilsey led the way with four ground balls. Button and Bendo each had three ground balls while Bredemann, Kelly Bunnick, Danielle Macek, and Caroline Gaines each picked up two. Bredemann and Lee won four draw controls each while Wilsey added three.
