Cardinals Fall to Royals in Landmark Title

SCRANTON, Pa. - Catholic women's lacrosse fell to Scranton in the Landmark Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon. 

Freshman Maddie McDevitt recorded a hat trick in the championship game to lead the offense, but the Cardinals couldn't overcome the Royals, giving Scranton its third straight title. 

The Cardinals took an early 2-1 lead just over five minutes into the game. McDevitt put Catholic on the board with 11:34 remaining in the first, tying the game at 1-1 before Madeline Kelly put Catholic ahead by a goal with 9:30 to play. Scranton scored the next four, getting two goals from Grace Lane to give her a first-quarter hat trick as Scranton built a 5-2 edge. Caroline Regan brought Catholic back within two before Jillian Lopez scored the final goal of the quarter, putting Scranton up 6-3. 

McDevitt scored the first goal of the second to make it a two-goal game, but Scranton responded with the next two to take an 8-4 halftime lead. 

Eileen Hewitt and McDevitt traded goals in the third, putting the game at 9-5 with 6:54 to play in the quarter. Lopez scored with 4:31 left in the third to push Scranton ahead by five heading to the fourth. 

The Royals offense put home six more goals in the fourth while Izzy Fiore scored the lone fourth-quarter goal for the Cardinals as Scranton broke away to clinch the title. 

The contest was extremely tight in the midfield, with turnovers and draw controls separated by just two. Scranton totaled 34 ground balls to Catholic's seven. 

Jessie Lee had seven draw controls, six ground balls, and caused three turnovers for Catholic, putting her over 200 career draw controls as a Cardinal. Grace Button caused five turnovers for Catholic while Caroline Gaines and Ariana Bransfield added two each. Lauren Bendo and Regan each had four ground balls.
