WASHINGTON, D.C. – Catholic men's tennis dropped a Wednesday afternoon contest to Goucher, 2-5, at the Dowd Family Tennis Courts. The Cardinals hung with the top team in the conference to start and put up a strong fight down the stretch but were unable to come away with the win. The Gopher remain undefeated in the Landmark seven games in.
The Cardinals opened the match by earning a tough doubles point with
James Earwood and
Diego Romo taking the No. 1 doubles match and
Lorenzo Neri and
Paulo Emanuelli taking the No. 2 doubles match. Both duos won tiebreakers to claim victory with No. 1 doubles winning six of the final eight points in their match, and No. 2 doubles fending off a set point before earning three straight points to clinch the first point of the contest.
Goucher pulled ahead 2-1 with wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles at the beginning of individual play and added three more throughout to remain perfect in conference play. Catholic was able to earn its second point thanks to a victory by
Diego Romo at No. 3. He started his match down a break but was able to stay focused to win the first set in a tiebreak. Romo's opponent took set two before he was able to win the final three games of the third set.
Two other singles matches also went three sets. Playing in the No. 6 spot,
Drew Andrianopoulos lost his first set but stormed back to win the second set. In the third, it remained close before Andrianopoulos lost by a single break of serve.
Henry Ogden saw a similar result at No. 5 singles. He won the first set quickly, 6-1, to jump out to an early lead. In the second set, he was down 2-5 and brought it back to 4-5 before his opponent took over. The third set featured a back and forth battle in which Ogden stayed close the whole way until the last game.
