WASHINGTON, D.C. - An impressive showing from Catholic women's tennis saw them pick up a 4-1 victory over fifth-seeded Drew to advance to the Landmark Conference Semifinals on Friday at Moravian.
Catholic grabbed the doubles point despite dropping a match at No. 1 doubles thanks to a furious comeback from
Paige Brightwell and
Meaghan Laniewski at No. 2 doubles. Down 5-2, the duo fought back to force a tiebreak, winning 8-6 to take a 7-6 victory and clinch the point.
Ella Knox and
Ava Niggemeier took care of business at No. 3 doubles, winning 6-4.
Drew tied the match with a victory at No. 2 singles as Sophie Weaver defeated Knox, but
Ava Kaloustian put the Cardinals back ahead with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles. Laniewski made it two wins on the day with a 6-4, 6-2 win to put Catholic in the driver's seat.
Despite dropping the first set 6-3,
Mairead O'Hara roared back, 6-1 and 6-3 over the next two sets to clinch the match with a victory at No. 4 singles. Both Niggemeier and
Shloka Tambat were locked in battles as the match concluded.
Wednesday marked Catholic's fourth victory in Landmark Conference Tournament history and first since a 5-4 victory over Elizabethtown in 2021. This was the first-ever meeting between Catholic and Drew in the conference tournament.
The Cardinals will go on to face top-seeded Moravian on Friday at 4 p.m. in Bethlehem, Pa.
