Catholic Takes Two From Lycoming on Senior Day

WASHINGTON, D.C.  — The Catholic softball team celebrated senior day on Saturday afternoon as it took on Lycoming in the final home Landmark doubleheader of the season. The Cardinals took leads early in both games and the pitching kept the Warriors off-balance throughout the day to capture a two-game sweep and improve their win total to 26.

GAME ONE- Catholic 3, Lycoming 1

The Cardinals started the scoring off in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of runs after Katie Scolese reached on a fielder's choice and Aubrynn Arcement reached on an error. Amy Gastright brought both of the runners in by ripping a double into left center field to make it a 2-0 game.

The Warriors pushed across their only run of the game in the top of the third inning after a pair of singles put runners on first and second with two outs. On an infield single from Hailee Sobieski, Catholic threw the ball away trying to get an out at second base which allowed the runner from third to come in to score to cut the deficit in half.

Catholic answered back in the bottom of the third after a lead-off single from Scolese. Gastright came through once again with her second RBI double of the game to bring in Scolese all the way from first base to extend the lead back to two.

After Arcement set the side down in order in the top of the fifth, the Warriors recorded back-to-back two out singles to put the tying run on base in the sixth. Arcement stepped up and picked up her lone strikeout of the game on a 3-2 pitch to keep the Cardinals lead intact.

Arcement retired Lycoming in order in the top of the seventh to capture a 3-1 victory in game one in her ninth complete game of the season.

GAME TWO- Catholic 10, Lycoming 2

Gastright continued to tear up Warriors pitching as she ripped a two run double that one-hopped the fence in left field to bring Amanda Gomez and Scolese in to score with two outs in the bottom of the first. Gomez and Scolese each singled in the inning to set up the at-bat for Gastright.

Sophia Colangelo got off to a strong start in the circle as she no-hit Lycoming through the first 12 batters of the game before allowing a single in the fourth. She induced back-to-back ground outs to escape the first four innings without allowing a run.

The offense for the Cardinals had an outburst in the bottom of the fourth, bringing four runs to the plate on three hits to take a 6-0 lead. Elise Faxon, Kerri Hatcliffe and Toni Ruley all reached base to start the inning with no outs and an error on a fielder's choice from the Warriors brought Faxon in to score. Scolese brought two more runs in on a single back up the middle and Arcement brought in the final run of the inning on a RBI groundout to second base.

After Lycoming plated a run in each the fifth and sixth innings, Catholic's offense had one last rally in them in the bottom of the sixth. Gomez led-off the inning with a triple to right field and immediately came in to score on a wild pitch. Sam Grillo and Scolese each singled and stole second and third to set up a RBI chance for Arcement who came through with a two-RBI double to left field. Olivia Stinchcomb came up with the final blow of the game with a RBI single to left center field to bring Olivia Brousseau in to score to wrap the game up in six innings, 10-2. The two wins advanced Catholic to 26-10 on the season and 10-4 in conference play which currently sits in second place.

Colangelo notched her 11th win of the season which ties her for the 11th most wins in a single-season in program history.
