Catholic Softball Breaks Program Record for Wins in a Season with Sweep of Marymount

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Catholic softball broke the program record for most wins in a regular season with a sweep of Marymount on Wednesday. The Cardinals moved to 28-10 overall with two conference games remaining.

GAME ONE – Catholic 14, Marymount 13

The Cardinals picked up a one run victory in game one thanks to big third and fifth inning performances. Elise Faxon led the team with three hits while Katie McHugh, Olivia Stinchcomb, and Kerri Hatcliffe each recorded two.

After a scoreless first inning, both teams scored one run in the second. McHugh was the first to cross the plate for the Cardinals after Sam Grillo drew a walk with the bases loaded.

Marymount added two in the third on a two run homer from Kaylynn Johnson, but Catholic came storming back with eight runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. The rally started with back-to-back singles from Stinchcomb and Faxson followed by a McHugh double to score them both. Toni Ruley singled up the middle and came around to score after Amanda Gomez reached on a field error. Grillo returned to the plate and sent a double down the right field line, giving way for Katie Scolese to reach on another error by the Saints. The third out of the inning came with the Cardinals leading 9-3.

Seven runs were plated in the top of the fourth, allowing Marymount to pull ahead once again. The visitors tacked on two more in the top of the fifth but Catholic responded with five of their own to solidify the last lead change of the contest. Grillo led off the inning with a walk and was able to advance to third on a stolen base and an Amy Gastright single. Stinchcomb came up with another single to score Grillo before Faxon slapped a two RBI single down the left field line. McHugh walked to load the bases for Hatcliffe, who reached on an error to even the game at 12 apiece. Ruley walked to allow the go ahead run to cross the plate and Geneva Webber recorded a ground out RBI to give Catholic the extra one they needed.

The Cardinals closed to game out after allowing one run in the seventh. Morgan O'Sullivan recorded her first collegiate start in the circle and threw for three and a third innings. Sophia Colangelo came in in relief and picked up her 12th win of the season to move into a tie for eighth on the all-time program record list.

GAME TWO – Catholic 9, Marymount 0

Alex Pley pitched a five inning shutout to highlight game two for the Cards. She faced 22 batters and stuck out three to secure her seventh win of the season.
The Catholic bats continued to stay hot as seven different Cardinals recorded a hit. Amanda Gomez and Scolese each had two to lead the team. Scolese also added three RBIs to her stat line while McHugh added two and Faxon added one.

Two big plays from Scolese and McHugh helped build a 6-0 advantage after the first inning. Scolese got things going in the top of the first with an RBI triple to center field, scoring Gomez after a lead off walk. McHugh stepped up to the plate with one on and sent a long ball over the left field fence for her seventh of the season. She moved into a tie for third all-time in home runs in a single season joining Taylor Stockinger (2011).

Three more runs crossed the plate of the Cardinals in the second to seal the game. Gomez led off with a single through the right side and Grillo reached on a perfectly placed bunt. Scolese singled through the left side to score two. She stole second, and came around to score on a subsequent play after catching the Saints off guard on a sacrifice fly.
The Cardinal defense held strong throughout the final three frames of action to end the game after five innings.

Catholic will play its last two games of the regular season on Saturday, May 3 as they take on Moravian in Bethlehem, Pa.
