WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic was dominant in a Landmark Conference victory over Susquehanna on Wednesday night, allowing just one goal in the first three periods before finishing off a 16-4 victory.
Susquehanna struggled immensely to find a rhythm in the first half, successfully clearing the ball just three times on 13 tries. The Cardinals took advantage of that, scoring four goals in the opening period before outpacing the River Hawks 5-1 in the second, building a 9-1 halftime edge.
Freshman sensation
Henley Bredemann scored just once, but it was the first goal of the contest for Catholic, her 29th of the season. She was one of four different scorers in the quarter as
Tori Wilsey,
Annie Galarza, and
Lindsay Sawyer joined the party.
In the second quarter, Sawyer and Galarza each scored again to make it a 6-1 game before
Izzy Fiore's 17th of the season made it 7-1 with 10:46 left in the half. After a spell of nearly eight minutes without a goal in the contest,
Ariana Bransfield put home her second goal of the season, followed by
Maggie Traynor's first of the day, making it 9-1.
Traynor came out of the gate red-hot in the second half, scoring her second and third goals of the game to start the running clock as Catholic led 11-1 with 5:25 left in the period. Fiore followed with her second to send Catholic into the fourth ahead by 11.
Maddie Rinker scored two fourth-quarter goals while Traynor added her fourth of the night and
Olivia Daniels made it nine different goal-scorers for the Cardinals.
Madeline Kelly handed out a career-high four assists for Catholic to reach 50 career points. In just five games this season, she has set a career-high with six assists.
The Cardinals dominated in the midfield with Wiley, Fiore, and
Jessie Lee each causing two turnovers while five different Cardinals had two draw controls.
Prior to tonight, Traynor had scored three goals in a game five times, but this marked her first four-goal effort. She has seven goals in her last three games after scoring two in the first six.
Jamie Handwerger picked up her third win in goal, playing three quarters and making two saves while allowing just one goal.
Alexandra Ragano made three saves in the fourth quarter.
With the victory,
Meghan McDonogh improves to 24-2 all-time against Susquehanna, now winning 17 consecutive contests. 13 of the 17 victories have come by 10 or more goals.
