Cardinals Drop Final Non-Conference Contest to Rowan

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Catholic women's lacrosse dropped its final non-conference contest of the season to Rowan, 8-11, on Wednesday evening. The Cardinals played the Profs even in the second half, but a six-goal first half for the visitors proved to be the difference.

Tori Wilsey scored the opening goal of the contest under a minute in to give Catholic an early lead. Rowan responded with three unanswered in the following six minutes to take a 3-1 advantage after the first quarter.

Catholic responded with back-to-back goals from Maggie Traynor to even the score at three with 8:25 remaining in the second quarter. Rowan was able to pull away slightly after finding the back of the cage on three consecutive shots, building its lead to 6-3 at the break.

Both defenses were very disruptive throughout the first half as each team recorded double-digit turnover numbers and failed a combined nine clears. The Cardinals caused nine turnovers in the opening 30 minutes of action, led by two apiece from Clare Martin and Kelly Bunnick. Martin finished with a game-high four caused turnovers, while Bunnick added three draw controls to her stat line for the third game in a row.

The Cardinals won the third quarter thanks to goals from Henley Bredemann, Lindsay Sawyer, and Brigid Brown. Bredemann's 31st goal of the season was assisted by Jessie Lee just nine seconds before Wilsey secured the draw control and Sawyer sent one home off an Izzy Fiore feed. Fiore also recorded an assist on Brown's goal. She ended the day with three helpers, bringing her season total to nine. Rowan added two in the quarter to maintain a two-goal lead.

Rowan sealed the victory in the final 15 minutes of action with a successful fast break and two women-up opportunities. Catholic made it 7-10 with 7:53 remaining off of Wilsey's second of the day and tried to spark a comeback with an Annie Galarza finish with 1:57 on the clock, but time expired before the Cardinals could overcome the deficit.

Bredemann led the team with seven draw controls, just ahead of Lee who had five. Galarza scooped up four ground balls, while Lauren Bendo, Grace Button, and Fiore each picked up three.

Catholic moved to 6-8 on the season ahead of its final three regular season games. Rowan's only loss of the season came back on March 26 when it fell in an overtime thriller to Scranton, 11-12.

The Cardinals will take on Juniata in their next contest. The Landmark Conference match is set to start at 7 p.m on Thursday, April 17.
