SELINGSGROVE, Pa. — After this weekend's doubleheader was moved to Sunday, the Catholic softball team was poised to continue its strong run of play in the Landmark against Susquehanna. The Cardinals split the doubleheader with the River Hawks, led by an outstanding pitching performance in the second game to capture a win in a low-scoring contest.
GAME ONE - Susquehanna 4, Catholic 3
Despite taking a 3-0 lead into the fifth inning, Catholic dropped game one of Sunday's doubleheader 4-3.Â
Catholic jumped ahead with a three-run second inning as starting pitcher
Aubrynn Arcement helped herself with a two-run double to center, driving in
Elise Faxon and
Olivia Stinchcomb, who reached on a double and single, respectively.
Kerri Hatcliffe added the third run with an RBI single to center, scoring Arcement to make it 3-0.Â
The Cardinals had a chance in the third, putting runners on first and third after a walk from
Amanda Gomez and a single from
Katie Scolese, but Susquehanna starter Brianna Jones worked out of it, getting Faxon and Stinchcomb to pop out.Â
Two hits and an error helped Susquehanna push four runs across in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 4-3 lead. Alyssa Mayorca put Susquehanna on the board after a Jones double put two runners in scoring position. With two outs, the River Hawks sent Mayorca in motion, getting Jones home on a throwing error from Faxon. After a walk and a stolen base, Katelyn Dugery tied the game with a fielder's choice as the throw wasn't on the mark to nab Mayorca at home. Finally, Arcement kept it in the infield off the bat of Savannah Patrone, but Lexi Palumbo scored to put the River Hawks ahead by a run.Â
Gomez and Scolese reached in the seventh, but Faxon was retired to end the contest. Gomez and Arcement each had two hits and a walk at the plate for Catholic as the Cardinals totaled eight hits and a pair of walks. Arcement took a complete-game loss, striking out three. Jones improved to 8-2 with a complete-game win, striking out four.Â
GAME TWO- Catholic 3, Susquehanna 0
The Cardinals got off to a strong start in the second game after Gomez led the game off with a walk and
Sam Grillo recorded a bunt single to put two on with nobody out. Faxon picked up the first RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly into center field to score Gomez for the first run of the game.
The lead was doubled for Catholic the very next inning as Arcement immediately put herself in scoring position with a triple off the fence in right center field. Hatcliffe followed up right behind her with an RBI single into right field to bring Arcement to the plate and make it a 2-0 game.
Sophia Colangelo was flawless throughout her start in the circle and started the game off by retiring the first 10 batters she faced. Susquehanna put two runners on base in the bottom of the fourth inning but Colangelo struck out the next batter and then forced a popup to the shortstop to retire the side and strand the runners.Â
The Cardinals added their final run of the game in the top of the fifth inning to push the lead out to three. Grillo picked up her second single of the game and moved up to second base on a groundout. With two outs, Stinchcomb ripped a double into left center field to bring Grillo in to score and make it a 3-0 game.Â
Colangelo continued to mow down the River Hawks and retired the final 11 hitters she faced in the game to finish her sixth complete game of the season and earn the Cardinals a split in the doubleheader with a 3-0 win. Catholic improved to 20-8 on the season and 7-3 in Landmark play.
