SCRANTON, Pa. - In the midst of the stretch run in Landmark Conference play, Catholic traveled to Scranton for Thursday doubleheader and came away with a split, improving to 8-4 with two conference series remaining.
GAME 1 - Scranton 2, Catholic 0
Emma Douglas was stellar in the circle for Scranton as the Royals took a brisk game one by a 2-0 score. The freshman earned her seventh win of the season with a complete game shutout, striking out four Cardinals.
Aubrynn Arcement was impressive as well, allowing just two runs in a complete game effort with three punch outs.Â
Two of Catholic's three hits were for extra-bases starting with Arcement lacing a one-out double in the second.
Kerri Hatcliffe lined out before
Katie McHugh struck out to end the inning, keeping Scranton ahead 1-0 after an Emmie Feltenberger RBI triple in the first.Â
After Scranton pushed the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth,
Amanda Gomez tried to spark a rally with a lead-off triple in the sixth, but Douglas retired the next three batters to end the threat.Â
Arcement singled in the seventh, giving her two of the three Catholic hits, but the contest ended as she was thrown out trying to swipe second.Â
GAME 2 - Catholic 9, Scranton 4
The Cardinal offense turned in a strong performance in game two, nearly quadrupling their hit output from game one with 11 hits and nine runs.Â
The Royals took an early 2-0 lead against starter
Alex Pley, but she wouldn't allow another run until the sixth inning while the Cardinals scored the next eight.Â
Juliana Janezic retired the first six batters of the game, but the Cardinals turned it around in the third, pushing three runs across. A pair of errors put two runners on with two away for
Sam Grillo who singled up the middle to load the bases.
Katie Scolese proceeded to clear the bases with a double to the gap in right-center, putting Catholic ahead by a run with her ninth double of the season.Â
After a scoreless bottom of the third from Pley, Catholic pushed five more runs across in the fourth.
Amy Gastright started it off with her first double of the contest before scoring on an
Olivia Stinchcomb double to make it 4-2. With two away,
Toni Ruley dropped down a bunt single and swiped second base before Gomez drove in Stinchcomb with an RBI single to left. Grillo followed with a double to score Ruley and Gomez, giving Catholic a 7-2 lead and forcing Janezic from the contest. The final run of the inning scored on an error to put Catholic ahead 8-2.Â
Scranton pulled the gap to 8-4 in the sixth, but a McHugh RBI double in the seventh extended Catholic's lead to five, setting up
Sophia Colangelo to shut the door and secure the victory.Â
Stinchcomb's double gives her 12 for the season, tying her for 10th all-time in a single-season in program history. Gastright finished with a pair of doubles, helping Catholic to six doubles for the contest. Gomez, Grillo, Gastright, and Ruley all has two hits for the Cardinals.Â
Catholic will host Mary Washington at Nats Academy on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m.Â
