WASHINGTON, D.C. – Wrapping up its stretch of four straight games against ranked opponents, the Catholic women's lacrosse team dropped a rainy Thursday evening contest to No. 4 Gettysburg, 9-17.Â
The Cardinals scored seven goals to the Bullets' 10 in the first half before a weather delay caused the game to be suspended for 70 minutes just before halftime. Play resumed with 20.8 seconds remaining in the second quarter and led into a second half where Catholic added two to their score while Gettysburg gained seven.Â
Tori Wilsey and
Henley Bredemann each scored two goals for the Cardinals. Five others added a goal each including
Maddie McDevitt, Izzy Fiore, Maggie Traynor, Lindsay Sawyer, and
Jessie Lee. Lee picked up the lone assist of the day for her squad, bringing her career total to 34.Â
Gettysburg was led by Emily Crane, who had seven points on four goals and three assists. Maddie Passarello also had a big day with five goals, finding the back of the cage on each of her shot attempts.Â
Catholic held a one-goal lead twice in the first quarter. After Gettysburg struck 32 seconds into the contest, Catholic responded with back-to-back goals. The visitors evened the score at two apiece five minutes in, but Catholic regained control at the 7:06 mark. Gettysburg went on a 5-0 run to end the quarter and added two more to start the second. The Cardinals got back on the board midway through the second frame and gained some momentum with a 4-1 run before the storm halted action.Â
After the delay, Catholic brought the score within two, trailing 8-10 with 28 minutes to play. Several impressive stops by the Cardinal defense including a timely caused turnover by
Caroline Gaines stopping all scoring for over five minutes. Gettysburg continued to find success late to score six unanswered before Catholic recorded the last goal of the game with 2:43 on the clock.
Bredemann led the team with three caused turnovers while she and Lee both recorded four draw controls.
Ariana Bransfield, Olivia Daniels and Wilsey also had multiple caused turnovers in the contest, each snagging two.Â
Clare Martin, Fiore, and goalkeeper
Jamie Handwerger all scooped up three ground balls. Handwerger came into the contest at the start of the second quarter and made four saves.
Alexandra Ragano made her fifth start in goal and stopped one from crossing the goal line in 15 minutes of work.Â
The Cardinals will now begin Landmark Conference play, starting with a home contest against Lycoming on March 22.Â
