Cardinals Split Doubleheader with Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Catholic softball team split a doubleheader with Washington College on Wednesday afternoon. After dropping the first contest, the Cardinal bats came alive in the second game to pick up a 14-5 win.
GAME ONE - Washington College 7, Catholic 1
Olivia Stinchcomb led off game one with a solo home run to center field to put the Cardinals up by one run early. The Shorewomen scored two in the second and five in the fourth for a final score of 7-1 in favor of the hosts.

The Cardinals recorded five hits in the contest, but Stinchcomb's bomb would prove to be their only run of the contest. Elise Faxon singled up the middle in the top of the second and Sam Grillo led off with a single to right center in the top of the sixth, but neither could round the bases. A decent seventh inning gave Catholic a chance to overcome the deficit. Kerri Hatcliffe singled down the left field line and Olivia Brousseau, who came in the pinch run, advanced to second on a wild pitch. A walk, and a Toni Ruley single, loaded the bases, however, a fly out to left field ended the game.

Stinchcomb pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Aubrynn Arcement. Opposing pitcher Gen Kozub pitched a complete game with six strikeouts, allowing only one earned run.

GAME TWO - Catholic 14, Washington College 5 (5 inn.)
Game two proved to be a team effort as eight different Cardinals recorded a hit and five players scored a run.

Ruley got things going with a lead-off double in the first at-bat of the contest. Amanda Gomez followed with an RBI single to put Catholic on top early. Stinchcomb put two on with a single through the left side before Katie Scolese cleared the bases with a three-run homer. Back-to-back hits from Leeah Koegel and Katie McHugh set up an opportunity for one more run to cross the plate on a fielding error, putting the visitors up 5-0 after the top of the first.

Two hits in the bottom of the inning allowed the Shorewomen to cut the deficit by one, but it was all Cardinals until the hosts were able to strike again in the fifth.

Starting the second inning with the top of the order due up, Ruley recorded another single and Gomez walked to set up Stinchcomb for a two-RBI double to left center. Faxon scored Stinchcomb with a ground out to second. Scolese and Hatcliffe singled before Koegel reached on a fielder's choice, putting runners at first and third with two outs. McHugh sent a ball to center field to plate another run, putting Catholic up 9-1.

The third and fourth innings saw more of the same as the Cardinals plated three runs on two hits with one error and left three on base followed by two runs on three hits and one left on base.

Washington College fought for a comeback in the bottom of the fifth, trying to prolong the game with a four-run effort, but Sophia Colangelo closed out the contest, picking up her fourth win of the sesson with three strikeouts in five innings.

The Cardinals are back in action this weekend as they host Juniata for a Landmark Conference contest.
