Cardinals Start Landmark Play 2-0 Over Eagles

WASHINGTON, D.C.  — The Catholic softball team finally returned for some home games after playing 12 consecutive games away from DC for a doubleheader against Juniata in the first Landmark matchup of the season for both teams. Solid pitching throughout the day spurred the Cardinals to two victories over the Eagles to begin conference play with a 2-0 start.

GAME ONE
  • Score: Catholic- 2, Juniata- 1
  • Records: Catholic (12-5), Juniata (5-12)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Aubrynn Arcement (4-3), L: Rylea Lynch (0-1)
  • The Short Story: In a game where runs came at a premium, Arcement gave the Cardinals nine five-hit innings to hold the Eagles to just one run and Catholic came up with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to take game one 2-1.

Juniata got the scoring started in the top of the second inning after Morgan Brumbaugh reached base on an error to start the inning. Skylar Howlett came up with a two-out double down the right field line to bring Brumbaugh to the plate and give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.

The Cardinals answered right back in the bottom of the second inning started off by a base-hit from Olivia Stinchcomb. Elise Faxon also came up with a single up the middle to put the runner on third with one out. Kerri Hatcliffe reached first on a fielder's choice to bring in the tying run to even things up at one.

Both teams had a few chances with runners on base throughout the game but nobody was able to push a run across and the game went into extra innings. A couple of walks put two runners on for the Eagles in the top of the ninth inning for Juniata with only one out. Arcement got the next two hitters to fly out and ground out respectively to stand the go-ahead run at second base.

Hatcliffe picked up a one-out single to put the winning run on base for the Cardinals. Arcement and Toni Ruley came up with back-to-back two-out singles to load the bases for Sam Grillo. Grillo worked a five-pitch walk to bring in the game-winning run to give Catholic a 2-1 win.

GAME TWO
  • Score: Catholic- 7, Juniata- 3
  • Records: Catholic (13-5), Juniata (5-13)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Sophia Colangelo (5-1), L: Isabella Countryman (0-2)
  • The Short Story: After both offenses found some momentum early, Colangelo came into the game and steadied the ship in the circle for Catholic while the offense came up with seven runs to lead the Cardinals to a two-game sweep of the Eagles.
After Juniata started the game off with three runs, Catholic came up with an answer of their own with two runs to cut the deficit to one. Katie Scolese picked up an RBI single after the first two Cardinals hitters reached to start the inning to score the first run. Faxon came up next and drove a sacrifice fly into right field to put up a crooked number for Catholic.

Grillo continued a solid day at the plate in the bottom of the third inning, leading off the inning with a triple into right center field. Scolese came up right behind her and notched her second RBI of the game with another single up the middle to bring the game back even at three.

The big rally for the Catholic offense came in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs to take a 6-3 lead. Mistakes from Juniata helped load the bases from Arcement with two outs. Arcement ripped a double just inside the left field foul line to bring in two runs and push the lead out to three. The Cardinals added one more insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Faxon singled up the middle to bring Grillo to the plate to make it a 7-3 ballgame.

Colangelo set the side down in order in the top of the seventh to seal a second victory on the day for Catholic, 7-3, to advance to 13-5 on the season.
