WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a thrilling battle on Carlini Field, Catholic women's lacrosse slowed a comeback effort from No. 10 Washington & Lee to force overtime but came up just short of the upset, falling 10-9.
Tori Wisley scored the go ahead goal with 3:55 remaining in regulation to put up the hosts up one. The Cardinal defense held strong as the clock ticked down, but Sophie Edwards was able to make an impressive move with one second left to send the game into overtime.
A
Jessie Lee draw control and two cards asset to the Genreals put Catholic in a prime position to win it before a save by opposing goalie, Iman Haddad stifled opportunity. After switching sides at the three minute mark, Washington & Lee regained possession and Hannah Van Son was able to fire the ball just across the goalline for the game winner.
The Cardinals jumped out to a commanding lead in the first quarter, scoring four straight goals before the Generals recorded a shot on target.
Maddie McDevitt secured the opening draw and found Lee to start things off one minute in.
Izzy Fiore and
Lindsay Sawyer added to the lead with free position goals before McDevitt found the back of the cage herself five minutes before the quarter ended.
Catholic kept the momentum rolling in the second with
Henley Bredemann joining in on the action. She scored four in a row for the Cardinals, bringing her season total to 20. Washington & Lee found their offensive in the second quarter with four goals of their own to cut the deficit to two with a 6-4 score at halftime.
Both sides scored two apiece in the third quarter, but a three-goal third quarter for the Generals proved to be the difference.
The Cardinal defense made several stops down the stretch to keep the game competitive. Led by goalkeeper
Alexandra Ragano who made four saves on the day, Catholic pressured Washington & Lee to turn the ball over 23 times and fail three clear attempts.
QUICK HITTERS:
- Four Cardinals caused three turnovers including Lee, Wisley, Lauren Bendo, and Caroline Gaines. Catholic finished the contest with 14 caused turnovers, its most this season.
- Lee won six draw controls to give her 28 on the season. The most by any Washington & Lee player was four.
- Bredemann's four goals make her the team's leading scorer by 11 goals. She has found the back of the cage in three or more times in four contests this season.
The Cardinals will face one more ranked opponent in No. 4 Gettysburg before starting Landmark Conference action.
