KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Catholic softball team wrapped up it's spring break trip with two games against St. Catherine and Hiram. The Cardinals used another late game comeback to pick up a victory over the Wildcats before dropping a low-scoring affair against the Terriers.
GAME ONE - Catholic 6, St. Catherine 4
Both offenses went quiet throughout the first four innings of the game as the teams combined for just one hit in the first half of the game. The Wildcats offense came up with the first breakthrough in the top of the fifth inning as they brought in four runs and three hits, while being aided by a couple of Catholic errors to take a 4-0 lead.
Catholic began to mount a comeback in the bottom of the fifth inning after
Leeah Koegel was hit by a pitch and
Sam Grillo drew a walk to put two runners on for the Cardinals. An error by the Wildcats allowed
Olivia Brosseau, who came in as a courtesy runner, to come across the plate for Catholic's first run.
Katie Scolese cashed in with two outs with a base-hit up the middle to bring in Grillo to cut the deficit down to two.
After
Olivia Stinchcomb shut things down in the circle in the top of the sixth, the Cardinals offense rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to storm ahead 6-4. After a single, error and walk sparked the rally,
Geneva Webber smacked an RBI single into center field to bring Catholic within one. The St. Catherine pitchers then lost the strike zone and walked in both
Katie McHugh and Koegel to put the Cardinals on top by one. Scolese came up with another RBI on a sacrifice fly into left field to plate an insurance run for Catholic to take a two run lead into the seventh.
After a lead-off hit by pitch, Stinchcomb set down the last three batters for the Wildcats to secure her first win of the season and the 10th for Catholic on the season.
Scolese led the team with two RBI for her second multi-RBI game of the season, bringing her season total to eight. Webber,
Aubrynn Arcement and
Toni Ruley also added RBI in the win.
GAME TWO - Hiram 3, Catholic 0
The lead came for the Terriers in the bottom of the first inning after the first two batters of the inning singled and doubled to immediately put two in scoring position. Darian Kanno came up with a two-RBI single into left field to put Hiram up 2-0, a lead they would hold onto for the entire game.
The only other run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth when Danielle Robles came up with a two-out RBI base-hit to left field to make the lead 3-0.
The Cardinals offense only came up with three hits in the game, coming from Webber, Ruley and Stinchcomb with Webber coming up with a double. The offense went quietly in the late innings to fall to the Terriers 3-0 to drop to 10-4 on the season to conclude the Florida trip.
Catholic's next matchup will be a doubleheader with Washington College on the road on Wednesday, March 19. First pitch for game one is slated for 3 pm.
