Fourth Quarter Surge Lifts No. 18 Colorado College Past Catholic


COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Catholic women's lacrosse team traveled to Colorado trying to earn its first ranked win of the season against No. 19 Colorado College. Despite not trailing for the first three quarters, the Cardinals fell behind early in the fourth quarter and were unable to reclaim the lead, falling to the Tigers, 14-13. 

The Cardinals edged out the Tigers 5-4 in the opening quarter to get out to an early advantage which included Catholic scoring the first four goals of the contest. Annie Galarza got the scoring started on a free position shot three minutes into the game. Colorado College fought back to tie things up at four with 59 seconds left but the Cardinals received another free position chance and Lindsay Sawyer scored with one second on the clock to regain the lead.

After the Tigers tied things back up with 12:02 remaining in the second, the Cardinals outscored them 3-1 for the remainder of the quarter to take a two goal lead into the halftime break. Henley Bredemann scored on an assist from Jessie Lee with 22 seconds to go in the half for her second goal of the quarter to make it 8-6.

Maddie McDevitt scored a goal to push the Catholic lead back up to three with 7:10 remaining in the third quarter. Oliv Janerico pulled Colorado College back within one after she scored twice in the latter half of the quarter, once coming off a free position shot to cut the deficit back down to one heading into the final quarter.

Momentum continued to swing in the favor of the Tigers as they started the fourth quarter on a 4-1 run to take the lead for the first time in the game 13-11. Bredemann came up with two goals, each after a Colorado College goal, to pull the Cardinals within one with three minutes late. Catholic was unable to get off another shot attempt in the final minutes and Colorado College completed the come from behind win, dropping the Cardinals to 1-4 on the season.

QUICK HITTERS
  • Bredemann finished with five goals to lead the team to make it the second time in the past three games with five or more goals for her. 
  • Lee finished with two goals and three assists making it the third game for her this season with multiple goals and assists. McDevitt also finished with two goals for her second multi-goal game of the season.
  • The Cardinals outshot the Tigers 36-21 and caused seven more turnovers in the loss. 

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday, March 15 at Carlini Field when they take on No. 10 Washington & Lee. The game is slated to start at 12 pm.
