Second Walk-Off Victory Helps Cardinals to Sweep of RPI

WASHINGTON, D.C.  — The Catholic baseball team looked to get above .500 for the first time in the young season with a home doubleheader against RPI on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals lineup came up with timely hits throughout the day and a late rally in the late innings of game two allowed the team to pick up two victories over the Engineers to move to 3-2 on the season.

GAME ONE
Score: Catholic- 11, RPI- 3
Records: Catholic (2-2), RPI (0-1)
Pitching Decision: W: Roman Tozzi (1-1), L: Dutch Hamilton (0-1)The Short Story: After a tie game heading into the bottom of the sixth, a Logan Eilbacher long ball gave the Cardinals offense the spark it needed to pull away in the late innings and capture an 11-3 victory.
  • Command issues in the Engineers pitching staff allowed a cocked number to be hung by the Catholic offense in the first inning. Zach Burton recorded the Cardinals only hit in the inning, but three walks and two hit batters allowed the team to plate three runs and take an early lead.
  • Tozzi tossed four shutout innings to start the game, but ran into trouble for the first time in the top of the fifth after Michael Lebenson led things off with a double. Two batters later Ian Oehlschla roped a pitch over the fence in right center field to get RPI on the board and cut the deficit to one. An RBI triple by Kameron Levesque the very next inning allowed the Engineers to pull the contest back even at three.
  • The Cardinals would not let things remain tied for too long as in the bottom of the sixth Eilbacher sent a ball over the wall in left field to give Catholic a one run lead. This led to an outburst from the Catholic offense as they scored a total of eight runs over the next two innings to get out to a comfortable eight run lead. Dante Pozzi ripped an RBI single to go along with Joe Marini's two RBI to deep right field in the seventh inning. Marini went on to poke another two RBI double to left field in the seventh inning to cap off the Cardinals first game on offense.
  • Sam Fairhurst came out of the pen and locked things down for Catholic, pitching the final three innings while only allowing one baserunner and punching out five. This prevented any kind of late rally for RPI and closed out a 11-3 win for the Cardinals in game one.

GAME TWO
Score: Catholic- 7, RPI- 6
Records: Catholic (3-2), RPI (0-2)
Pitching Decision: W: Luke Cardman (1-0), L: Zach Zajac (0-1)
The Short Story: After falling behind 6-1, the Catholic offense found ways to chip away at the deficit in the final three innings, then in a tie game in the ninth, Mark Villanueva darted home on a wild pitch with two outs to clinch the Cardinals a doubleheader sweep.
  • Eilbacher and Sammy Burman reached base with one away in the bottom of the second before Steve Thomas laced a double into the alley in left center field to bring home Burman and give Catholic an early 1-0 lead.
  • After a smooth first five innings, Cody Bosak ran into a rocky sixth inning that started with two walks and a single before even recording an out. A comebacker to the mound was thrown away, causing two runs to score to put the Engineers on top 2-1. Two more runs came across on Catholic mistakes in the inning and RPI took a 4-1 advantage. Back-to-back hits from Aidan Hicks and Julian Scarpa tacked on two more runs to the Engineers lead the next inning to put the Cardinals down by five.
  • Catholic responded nicely with four runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh to pull back within one late. After a run came in on a double play and an RPI error, Mitchel Johnson lashed a single down the left field line to bring in Marini. Burman kept the line moving right behind him with a double into right center field to plate Johnson.
  • Johnson brought the spark the Cardinals needed down by one in the bottom of the ninth inning with a lead off double to immediately put himself in scoring position. Lance Eilbacher pinch ran for him, and came across to score the tying run after a throwing error for RPI. The Cardinals loaded the bases with two away before the wild pitch that brought in Villaneuva which clinched the second win of the day for the Cardinals.
Inside the Box Score
  • Burman reached base five times in the game two win with a pair of base hits and a career-high tying three walks which is the second time he has walked three times in a game in his career.
  • Fairhurst earned the second save of his career and the first one by a Catholic pitcher this season with his three inning performance in the first game.
  • The walk off win was the second such win for the Cardinals so far this season, joining the 5-4 win over Stevens on February 23.

The Cardinals return to the diamond tomorrow, March 2, for an away game against Marymount (Va.). First pitch is slated for 2 pm at Capital One Park.
