Catholic at Scranton | Landmark Women's Basketball Championship Preview

WASHINGTON, D.C.  — The 15th ranked Catholic women's basketball team is making its 10th appearance in the Landmark Conference Championship on Saturday, February 28 at the John Long Center in Scranton with tip set for 2 pm. It will be the Cardinals sixth conference championship appearance in the last seven tournaments. 

How They Got Here
The Cardinals started the tournament off with an 117-71 victory over Goucher in the team's first ever meeting with the Gophers in the conference tournament. Five Cardinals finished in double figures, led by Kerry Flaherty who finished with 17 points while knocking down five threes. Sofia Travieso came in behind her with a career-high 15 points, followed by Olivia Boccella who totaled 14 while knocking down four triples. Catholic's 117 points were the most scored in a Landmark tournament, outscoring the previous record by 25 points. 

Catholic went on to the semi-final and came away with a 79-67 win over the second-seed, Elizabethtown to advance to the championship game. Flaherty shined once again for the Cardinals, leading the way with a season-high 22 points while shooting 6-for-11 from downtown. She set the single-season conference record for most threes in a season with her current season total now sitting at 76. Anna Scoblick recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds while also dishing out five assists. Catholic made a season-high 21 free throws and used a 14-2 run in the fourth quarter to help close out the win. The team is now 5-2 all-time against the Blue Jays in the conference tournament.

Tournament History
The Cardinals have won the conference tournament three times in the program's history (2011-2012, 2012-2013, 2014-2015) and the team is 3-6 in conference championship games. Overall in the tournament, Catholic holds a 14-10 record.

Catholic vs. Scranton History
Catholic has squared off with Scranton nine times in the conference tournament, all of which have come in the conference championship game. The Royals have won the last nine Landmark Conference Championships and have defeated the Cardinals six times during that run. Last season, Scranton knocked off Catholic 57-48 at Franny Murray Court.

The Royals took both games in the regular season against the Cardinals by scores of 77-55 and 62-53. Both teams have spent the entire season in both the d3hoops.com and WBCA polls. Scranton's lone loss of the season came in the regular season finale to Elizabethtown, 70-64. The Royals lead the all-time series 33-12 over the Cardinals with the Cardinals last win coming last regular season when they defeated Scranton 89-86 in overtime.

Stats of Note 
The Cardinals currently rank 17th in the country in points per game, averaging 77.4 points per game. Catholic also ranks 19th in the country in three point percentage at 34.2% and 21st in turnovers per game at 8.3. On the defensive end the Cardinals rank 11th in the nation in opponents field goal percentage at 31.6%.
