Catholic at Drew | Landmark Men's Basketball Championship Preview

WASHINGTON, D.C. - On Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m., Catholic men's basketball will take on top-seeded Drew in the Landmark Conference Championship Game in Madison, N.J.

HOW THEY GOT HERE

Catholic (22-4, 16-2)
  • The Cardinals earned the number-two seed in the Landmark Conference Tournament after a 16-2 regular season. Catholic's only two losses came to top-seeded Drew. 
  • Catholic was dominant in its Landmark Semifinal, defeating third-seeded Wilkes by 20 points, 96-76, leading by as many as 32 in the contest. Brian Herbert and CJ Ruoff each had career performances with Herbert leading all scorers with 26 points and Ruoff adding 19 off the bench. 
  • The Cardinals' 96 points tied the previous Landmark Conference Tournament record set by Moravian in 2018 during a 96-91 overtime victory against the Drew Rangers in the Landmark Semifinals. 
  • Catholic outscored its opposition by an average of 16 points per game in Landmark Conference contests with Sean Neylon leading the way averaging 18.4 points per game in those 18 contests. 

Drew (23-3, 18-0)
 
  • Drew was dominant in the Landmark Conference regular season, running the table with a perfect 18-0 season. Drew played just four games decided by single digits in the league, two of those being wins over the Cardinals. 
  • The Rangers set the new Landmark Conference Tournament record for points in a game in their 97-81 victory over Susquehanna on Thursday night. All five starters scored at least 12 points led by Peso Crump with 21 and Josh Kline who added 16 points and 12 assists. 
  • Drew outscored its opponents by 18.2 points per game in Landmark play, averaging 88.9 points and allowing 70.7. Kline led the scoring effort at 14.7 per game in Landmark play while six players made at least 20 threes in conference play. 
TOURNAMENT HISTORY
  • Catholic is 9-10 all-time in Landmark Tournament contests, winning three out of the five championship games it reached. 
  • Catholic won the 2013, 2016, and 2024 Landmark Conference Championships, defeating Susquehanna in 2024 and 2016 and Juniata in 2013. Both of Catholic's losses in the championship game came at the hands of Scranton in 2011 and 2015. 
  • The Cardinals are 2-1 all-time against Drew in the tournament, defeating the Rangers in the semis in 2011 and 2015 while losing to Drew in the semis in 2022. 
  • Drew has reached the Landmark Championship Game four times, most recently making it in 2022 after defeating the Cardinals. 
CATHOLIC VS. DREW HISTORY
  • Since the inception of the Landmark Conference, Catholic holds a 24-14 advantage in the all-time series, however, Drew has won the three most recent meetings and 12 of the last 16 matchups. The Cardinals won both meetings in the 2022-23 season, beating the Rangers 96-90 in double overtime in Madison and 81-76 at home. In 2023-24, Catholic dominated the first meeting in Madison, winning 88-59, but the Rangers took the victory in D.C., beating Catholic 96-81 on Senior Day. 
  • This season, Catholic led by 16 in the first meeting on January 11, but the Rangers came back, sending the game to overtime on an Eli Yusavage three before pulling out a 76-71 win. Yusavage had 20 off the bench while Pat Higgins had 18 points and nine boards. Neylon had 15 for Catholic while Justin Green added 12 and 11 boards. 
  • On February 15, Drew ended Catholic's 19-game road win streak, the longest in all of NCAA men's basketball with a 77-70 victory. Crump led Drew with 21 and seven boards while Kline scored 19 points. 
STATS OF NOTE
  • Catholic ranks sixth nationally in rebounding margin, grabbing 11 more rebounds per game than its opponents. 
  • The Cardinals rank 17th nationally in scoring defense, allowing 63.3 points per contest. 
  • Shooting 37.6 percent from three, the Cardinals sit 18th in Division III in three-point percentage. 
  • Neylon ranks third nationally in three-point percentage, shooting 48.9 percent from distance while making the sixth-most threes in Division III with 88. 
  • One of the most prolific shooting teams in the country, Drew is fourth nationally with 12.6 makes from distance per game. They also rank sixth in the nation in scoring offense (90.8) and fifth in scoring margin (17.2).
