ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — The Catholic women's basketball team traveled to Elizabethtown for a semifinal matchup in the Landmark Conference tournament with the goal of heading to a second straight conference championship. After a tightly played game throughout, a key 14-2 run in the fourth quarter gave the Cardinals a 12 point lead that they would not squander in the final minutes to head to a 10th Landmark Conference Championship with a 79-67 win over the Blue Jays.
The Cardinals used an early 7-0 run to get out to a 9-3 lead in the first quarter and a pair of three's by
Kerry Flaherty gave Catholic some early momentum. The Blue Jays fought back and tied things up at 14 before
Keegan Douglas knocked down a floater while getting fouled and
Sofia Travieso sank a pair of free throws to put the Cardinals on top 19-14. Allyia Kennedy made two foul shots with 18 seconds left in the quarter to make it a 19-16 game heading into the second. Catholic did a bulk of its damage in the second quarter from the free throw line as they went 7-for-8 as a team to help take a 36-28 lead into the halftime break.
Anna Scoblick and Douglas led the charge with five and four points respectively.
Elizabethtown cut the deficit down to two in the opening minutes of the third quarter with a quick 6-0 with buckets from DaniRae Renno, Summer McNulty and Jess King. The Cardinals answered with a layup from
Carly Mulvaney and a triple from Flaherty to go back up by seven. Flaherty went on to hit two more three's in the quarter to keep Catholic up by multiple possessions, but a 10-4 run from the Blue Jays, capped off by a bucket from Summer McNulty at the buzzer, trimmed it to a 55-53 game heading into the final quarter.
The pivotal stretch in the game came after the Blue Jays tied things up at 55 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. The Cardinals seized control by going on a 14-2 run over a 2:51 stretch in which the team made five straight shots, including two from beyond the arc. Mulvaney scored five points during the run and Scoblick added four. Elizabethtown's offense also had a hard time getting going in the quarter, shooting 5-for-18 (27.8%) and just 2-for-6 from deep. The Cardinals continued to get the job done at the free throw line, going 9-for-10 in the quarter to help them seal a 79-67 win and advance to the Landmark Conference Championship.
Flaherty dropped a season-high 22 points while going 7-for-14 from the field and 6-for-11 from deep. Her six made three's are the most in program history in a Landmark Conference tournament game. Her season total is now up to 76 which sets the record for the most made threes in a single-season in conference history.
Scoblick finished with 16 points, while knocking down eight free throws, which was the second most made free throws in a Landmark tournament contest in program history. She also pulled down 10 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the season. Douglas and Mulvaney also finished in double figures with 14 and 13 points respectively.
The Cardinals made a season's best 21 free throws in 24 attempts for a percentage of 87.5. Scoblick's eight made free throws tied her career high while Douglas was a perfect 5-for-5 at the line.
The Cardinals will head to the Championship for the second straight season and the sixth time in the past seven seasons. It will be the ninth time that Catholic meets Scranton in the conference championship game.
Tip off for Saturday's conference championship game at the John Long Center is set for 2 pm.
