WASHINGTON, D.C. - The 25th-ranked Catholic Cardinals put forth a valiant effort late, erasing a 10-8 deficit in the final eight minutes before falling 11-10 in overtime to Bates College on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals' home-opener got off on the right foot as
Jessie Lee scored less than three minutes into the contest to put the Cardinals ahead 1-0. Less than two minutes later,
Lindsay Sawyer followed with her third goal of the season to put the Cardinals ahead by two goals.
However, the Bobcats responded with the next four goals, taking a 4-2 lead with 13:22 remaining in the first half. The Cardinals punched back, scoring the next three over a 1:10 stretch, starting with freshman
Henley Bredemann's first of the game. Lee found the first-year player, who finished off her fourth goal of the season to pull Catholic back within one.
Izzy Fiore tied the contest at 4-4 with 11:49 to play in the second as
Maddie Rinker picked up the assist. Next, it was
Madeline McDevitt's turn to join the fray as Lee picked up another assist to a first-year player to put the Cardinals ahead 5-4 with 11:21 on the second quarter clock. The Cardinals would also score two of the final three goals of the contest to take a 7-5 lead into halftime.
Annie Galarza got on the board for the first time to make it 6-5 before McDevitt's second of the half closed out the scoring in quarter number two.
Bates got the better of the Cardinals in the third, outscoring Catholic 4-1 over the 15 minutes. Zoe Schaedle and Lucy Taylor scored their first goals of the season to tie the contest before Caroline Taggart's third of the day gave the Bobcats an 8-7 lead with 2:16 to play in the third. Fiore answered almost immediately, tying the contest at 8-8 just 18 seconds later. Grace Yonchak would score the final goal of the period to put Bates ahead by one.
After Laci Raveis scored with 8:05 left in regulation to make it 10-8, the Cardinal defense locked down and Lee put home her second goal with 7:20 left to pull Catholic within one. Bredemann scored for the second time, this one off a Galarza assist, as the Cardinals fought back to tie the contest with 6:40 to play. The remaining time was not enough to decide a winner and the contest went to overtime. Raveis' finished things off with her hat trick goal to knock off the Cardinals on the road.
