Competitive Cardinals Fall Short in Season-Opener at No. 2 Sea Gulls

SALISBURY, Md. - The Catholic Cardinals outscored Salisbury, the No. 2 ranked team in the country, in the second half on Saturday in a 14-10 road loss.

A dominant second quarter for the Sea Gulls proved to be the difference as Salisbury outscored Catholic 6-2 over the 15 minutes.

After falling behind 2-0, Henley Bredemann scored the first goal of the season for Catholic late in the first, putting one home off an Izzy Fiore feed. The Gulls would score the first four goals of the second quarter before Jessie Lee put an end to the run with 6:02 left in the first half. After two Audrey Harrington goals, Lindsay Sawyer converted on a free-position attempt and Catholic trailed 8-3 at the break.

Salisbury scored the first goal of the third quarter, but Bredemann and Fiore responded with goals for Catholic to pull them back within four. The Sea Gulls would score three of the next four goals, but Catholic scored a pair of free-position goals in the final 2:52 and trimmed the gap to four heading into the final quarter.

Bredemann's third score of the game brought Catholic within three with 13:18 to play, but a Regan McDonnell answer was crucial for Salisbury with 11:30 to play. Sawyer scored her second of the day with 9:21 to go, making it 13-10, but Miranda Mears would score the only goal of the final 9:21 with 4:25 to play to seal the deal on a 14-10 victory for the nation's preseason number two team.
