WASHINGTON, DC – The Catholic men's basketball team takes down Christopher Newport in their home opener with a score of 84-74.
The Cardinals opened up the first half strong, out-scoring the Captains 13-6 in the first seven minutes, with
Jamie Ntiamoah putting the first two points on the board. Christopher Newport answered quickly, responding with nine points to Catholic's two, evening the score for the first time in the afternoon at 15 apiece with 11:31 left in the half. The Captains' Toa Hollenbeck continued to put pressure on the Cardinal defense, scoring 21 of his 25 points in the first half. Despite this, the Cardinals were able to fight back and head into halftime with a 42-36 lead.
The Cardinals had perfect symmetry in the second half, once again scoring 42 points.Â
The back-and-forth action in the second half led the Cardinals to the free throw line. Catholic had a total of 31 foul shot attempts in the second half alone, scoring on 18 of them.
Charley Helpting was the most frequent visitor, scoring six points on his nine attempts for a .666 free throw percentage.Â
The Cardinals never lost their lead in the second half. With 6:32 left in the game, a three-pointer from
Googie Seidman gave the Cardinals their largest lead over the Captains at 19 points (69-50).Â
Leading scorer
CJ Ruoff had a .533 field goal percentage and collected a three-pointer, totaling 20 points for the Cardinals. The senior also collected two rebounds and six assists.Â
Brian Herbert and
Peter Gellene each scored 11 points in today's matchup. Two Cardinals had an impressive 8 rebounds each.
Jamie Niatimoah earned 4 offensive and 4 defensive while teammate
Ryan Pegg collected 1 on offense and 7 on defense.Â
