Cardinals Fall to Scranton in Landmark Semifinals

SCRANTON, Pa. - The Catholic volleyball team hit the road on Thursday to face off against Scranton in the Landmark Conference Tournament Semifinal match up. The Cardinals battled against the Royals in each set, but ultimately fell in the meeting, 3-0.

Scranton struck first in set one, but Catholic responded quickly as the two teams traded points early on. The Cardinals built a steady lead until the Royals found a groove and surged back ahead.  The Cardinals cut a seven-point deficit down to 21-18, but the Royals took the first set 25-19.

Catholic opened set two with a 2-0 to start but the back-and-forth began quickly from there. Scranton was determined to keep the contest close, the two teams going point-for-point. The Royals were able to create separation late, taking a substantial lead and claiming set two 25-21.

The Cardinals were not ready to give up yet, fighting until the last serve. The Cardinals trailed for a portion of the third set, trying to find their rhythm. It wasn't until the 19th point when a block from Julia Raab tied it up. Catholic held on tight to the lead, pushing the Royals past 25. But in the end, the Royals took the third set, 28-26.

During the match, Kate Berra picked up 14 assists, achieving a major milestone of 1000 career assists, including 484 this season alone. Anna Maria Carella recorded 12 assists of her own, bringing her season total to 460 and her career total to 968.

Raab posted 11 digs and eight kills during the match, surpassing the 300-kill mark and reaching 500 career kills in just her sophomore season. Erin Faughnan contributed seven kills against the Royals, closing out the season just behind Raab with 222 kills.
