Catholic Captures Win Against Moravian in Landmark Opener


WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic volleyball team hosted Moravian in its first Landmark match of the season. With a 3-0 win, the Cardinals start the season undefeated in conference play.

Set 1: 25-19
The Cardinals started off the first set in a deficit, trailing the greyhounds 10-5. Slowly the Cardinals started to even the score with kills from Juliette Cummings, Erin Faughnan, and Caroline Welsh to bring the score to 16-14. A pair of kills from Julia Raab and Julia Turchiano evened the score to 16 apiece. The Greyhounds battled back to once again tie the score to 19-19, but from that moment on, Catholic ran away with the set. The Cardinals went on a 6 point streak and came away with a win in the first set. 

Set 2: 25-21
The second set was a back-and-forth affair, with the score being tied a total of 13 times during the set. Kills from Cummings, Raab, and Vivian O'Brien help the Cardinals gain a lead of 23-19 heading into the final points of the set. With the set at 23-21, a pair of kills from Turchiano and Welsh sealed the deal and gave Catholic its second set.

Set 3: 27-25
Catholic started the final set strong, highlighted by two aces from Anna Maria Carella and one from Alejandra Garcia to put the set at 8-4. Catholic started to pull ahead little by little, but Moravain fought back with a 5 point streak to pull ahead 13-12. The rest of the set went back and forth changing leads. With the set tied at 24-24, off of a kill from Alani Rivera Diaz, the Cardinals entered a win-by-two situation. A kill from Kate McBrierty and one from Rivera Diaz once again tied the game at 25-25. The Cardinals found a way to win two points back to back as a result of Greyhound attack errors to win the third set and win the match. The Cardinals had a match high of 16 kills in the third set, with 42 on the night overall. 

Cummings had herself a night with a career high 11 kills and an outstanding attack percentage of .625. Junior Kate Berra and sophomore Raab each earned themselves a double-double. Berra had 16 assists and 10 digs, while Raab collected 10 kills and 11 digs.

This is the first time that Catholic has swept Moravian since October 30th, 2021.

Up next, Catholic will host a tri-match on October 4th with Wilkes and Salisbury. The first match will be against Wilkes at noon.
