ARLINGTON, Va. - The Catholic volleyball team traveled across the Potomac to visit Marymount University on Saturday for a two-match showing. The Cardinals faced off against Pratt Institute and Marymount, defeating them both in three sets to go 2-0 on the day.
MATCH ONE - Catholic 3, Pratt 0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-13)
In set one, Pratt started off the set going 3-0 against the Cardinals, and continued to build on that lead. After some time trailing, the Cardinals emerged from behind, taking a narrow lead over the Cannoneers. The set saw a few more tied scores between the Cardinals and the Cannoneers. After a kill from
Juliette Cummings put Catholic in the lead 15-14, they held onto it for the rest of the set, taking set one 25-23.
Catholic came out hot in set two, going on a 8-2 run to kick it off. The Cannoneers attempted to mount a comeback, finding the equalizer at 11 points. The Cardinals refused to let them take the set, extending their lead and taking the set 25-17.
With two sets in their favor, the Cardinals went on an impressive 12-1 run to start the third set. Pratt attempted to narrow the gap, but Catholic continued to extend their lead. They closed out set three and secured their victory with a score of 25-13.
Julia Raab led the charge in the Cardinals' first match of the day with 10 kills and six digs.
Mariana Roman Cruz and
Julia Turchiano followed closely behind with eight kills apiece while
Anna Maria Carella played a crucial role on the court during the meeting, recording 19 assists. Catholic notched 36 kills to Pratt's 27, and 10 aces to their seven.
MATCH TWO - Catholic 3, Marymount 0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-12)
Marymount took an early lead in set one, going up 7-3 to start the match. A kill from Roman Cruz sparked a fire in the Cardinals, allowing them to go on an 8-0 run. They took the lead and maintained it for the rest of the set, taking set one 25-19.
There was a solid amount of back-and-forth in set two, the Cardinals responding to every Marymount point. After a Marymount service error, Catholic took the lead. The Cardinals maintained for the rest of the set by a narrow margin, taking set two 25-21.
With a win and two sets under their belt, Catholic took the third set confidently to close out the day. The Cardinals held the Saints to just 12 points in set three, solidifying their sweep.
Roman Cruz led the charge with nine kills in the meeting against Marymount, followed by Raab with eight. Raab also picked up 10 digs in the meeting to bring her total to 16 digs and 18 kills on the day. Carella had another double-digit showing in the assists category, recording 15 assists for a total of 34 between the two matches.
Erin Faughnan recorded four blocks in the meeting and is now leading the squad alongside
Juliette Cummings with 42.0 blocks.
This 2-0 outing brings the Cardinals to 11-13 overall. They will continue their road stint to close out the regular season, traveling next to Elizabethtown on Friday, October 31st at 7 p.m.
