Cardinal Defense Locks Down a Tie Against Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. - The Catholic women's soccer team faced off against Scranton University on the road on Saturday afternoon for their last road game of the regular season. The Cardinals fought hard against the Royals in the meeting, holding off their shots and finishing the game in a 0-0 draw.

The game was neck-and-neck from the first whistle. Catholic picked up a corner kick early in the first half, attempting to capitalize and find the back of the net. The Royals had two corners in response, but the Cardinal defense held strong. The game was scoreless heading into the halftime break.

The second half saw a little more fire from the Royals. The team added eight more shots to their tally, three of which came from Morgan Griffin. The Cardinal defense proved to be a formidable force, preventing Scranton from getting on the board. The match ended in a 0-0 draw, bringing Catholic to an overall record of 8-6-3 and 5-1-2 in conference play.

Goalkeeper Ava Rieger recorded a season-high 12 saves in the meeting against the Royals. Rieger showcased her skills, leading the Cardinal defense to hold strong for the full 90 minutes. Faith Sawyer and Payton Hardy played crucial roles on the pitch, Sawyer shutting down the attack and Hardy winning the 50/50 battle in the midfield. On the offensive side, Sawyer, Caroline Aponte, Ava Gregorio, Teighan Boyle and Katie Scully all recorded shots for the Cardinals. Aponte currently leads the squad with 54 shots this season.

Up next, the Cardinals will return home to close out the season against Juniata on Tuesday, October 28th at 7 p.m. on Carlini Field.
