Michalak's Late Goal Earns Catholic a Victory over Elizabethtown

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The 23rd-ranked Catholic men's soccer team looked to stick to its winning ways so far this season in a Landmark matchup against Elizabethtown on Tuesday night at Carlini Field. In the two final minutes of the game, Azaria Tewodros won the ball for the Cardinals on the right side of the 18-yard box and played a perfect pass for Seth Michalak right in front of goal who steered the ball into the back of the net to earn Catholic a 1-0 victory over the Blue Jays.

Corey Magro started the game-winning attack off by launching a pass well within the Cardinals side of the field into a dangerous area for Tewodros to track it down. Tewodros ran down the ball after a touch from an Elizabethtown defender to set up his centering pass to Michalak for the winning goal.

Catholic created a few decent chances throughout the first half, outshooting Elizabethtown 8-1 in the half but were unable to break the deadlock. Magro and Ben Zimmer had solid chances to score on back-to-back shots but Pedro Miranda came up with saves to keep the Cardinals off the board.

Holden Woodings got off a few shots on target in the second half but Miranda continued to make saves to keep the score tied a zero. Owen Allegro made a key save eight minutes into the half, coming off his line to stop a Blue Jay shot from giving them the lead. Allegro made his second save of the match 12 minutes later and the Catholic backline held strong throughout the rest of the match to earn a shutout.

The Cardinals are now 8-0-5 this season and their run of unbeaten games against Landmark opponents is now at 31.

Michalak's goal in the final minutes was his third of the season and his second game-winning goal on the year. He is now tied for the third-most goals on the squad this season. Tewodros recorded his second assist, making him the fifth Catholic player to have multiple assists and it is the first multi-assist season in his career.

Allegro earned his second shutout of the season and it was the fifth shutout on the season for the Cardinals. He alongside Ellington Andrews, Charlie Paparella and Magro played the full 90 minutes for the Cardinals in the victory.

Catholic will be back in action on Saturday, October 18 for another home contest against Drew on Cardinal Weekend. Kickoff is set for 3:30 pm on Carlini Field.
