Catholic Wins Big on Senior Day Against Wilkes


WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic men's soccer defeated Wilkes 3-0 on its Senior Day.

The Catholic men's soccer team celebrated its seniors Daniel Ferrer, Ben Zimmer, Holden Woodings, and Nick Licari prior to today's conference matchup against Wilkes.

The Cardinals came out hot with a shot from senior Woodings in the 2nd minute of the match. Azaria Tewodros attempted a header during the 10th minute, but just missed the goal. Tewodros created another opportunity for himself just minutes later. In the 16th minute Carson Shamoo found Tewodros in the box. Tewodros found the back of the net to put the Cardinals on the board for the first time this match.

Now up 1-0, Catholic kept its foot on the gas. In the 22nd minute, senior Woodings broke through his defenders and collected a goal of his own. 

In the second half, the Cardinals earned 10 corners, but were unable to convert. With just mere seconds on the clock, Christian Backich continued battling his defenders. Backich found senior Nick Licari open just atop the penalty box. Licari and sent a shot sailing to the left of the goal just past Wilkes goalkeeper Matthew Conti. With only one second left on the clock after the goal, the Cardinals won 3-0.

Goalkeeper Owen Allegro saw no shots in 83 minutes of play. Senior Ferrer made his first appearance of the season in the last 7 minutes of play and also faced no shots.

Catholic had 24 shots in today's matchup, with 9 of them on goal. The Cardinal defense additionally allowed no shots from the Colonels.

The Cardinals were also awarded a season high of 14 corners in today's matchup.

Up next, the Cardinals will host Elizabethtown in a conference matchup on Tuesday, October 14th at 7 p.m. at Carlini Field.
