WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic men's soccer team looked to extend its regular season unbeaten streak to 20 games on Wednesday against Salisbury. The Cardinals created dangerous chances in key spots throughout the match, coming away with a 2-1 win over the Seagulls, helped by a game winning goal from
Seth Michalak.
The Cardinals created a great chance to score in the opening seven minutes of the match when
Holden Woodings and Michalak fired back-to-back shots on target, but Nate Jones stood tall and made both saves to keep things tied.
Ben Zimmer set up the first goal of the match by delivering a beautiful cross on the right side of goal to give one of his teammates a shot.
Corey Magro rose up and smashed home a powerful header for his goal of the season to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead just over 13 minutes into the action.
It took the Seagulls just seven minutes to find an equalizer in the first half as it came off a throw-in from the left side of the penalty area to create a chance right in front of the Catholic goal. David Brunetti guided a shot into the back of the net to tie the game at one.
Catholic took the lead back in the second half after
Francesco Mattucci played a cross over on the right side to Michalak. Michalak took the pass from outside the 18-yard box and lofted a shot into the left side of the net to once again give the Cardinals a one goal advantage.
Owen Allegro came up with his lone save of the match in the final seven minutes on a low driven shot to his near post to keep the Cardinals in front. Catholic held on in the final minutes to close out a 2-1 victory to improve to 5-0-4 on the season.
Michalak has now scored in back-to-back games and he has the first multi-goal season of his career. Zimmer continues to rack up assists this season with a team-leading five after his one tonight. All of his career-high five assists have come in the past five games and he is now tied for the ninth-most assists in a single season in DIII program history. He is just one assist shy of cracking the top 10 in career assists in DIII program history.
Allegro played the full 90 minutes in goal to improve his record to 4-0-4 on the season. Magro,
Ellington Andrews,
Graham Leary and
Charlie Paparella all played the full 90 minutes for Catholic.
The Cardinals will play their first road conference game on Saturday, October 4 against Moravian. Kickoff is set for 3:30 pm at John Makuvek Field.
