Cardinals Fall in Two Matches at Worthington Classic


WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Cardinals completed their weekend at the Worthington Classic with two losses to Bethel and Gallaudet.

MATCH ONE - Bethel 3, Catholic 0 (27-25, 25-17, 25-12)

The Cardinals opened up their Saturday at the Worthington Classic with a match against Bethel, and the Royals controlled the match throughout and came away with a victory in straight sets, 3-0.

Down 19-14 in the opening set, Catholic came storming back and went on 6-0 run to take a late 20-19 lead. During the run, Erin Faughnan, Julia Raab and Mariana Roman Cruz all picked up kills to help Catholic get back into the match. Down 24-22, the Cardinals once fought back with kills from Raab and Ava Borcky to pull even at 24.  Bethel went on to take three of the last four volleys to take the set and get ahead 1-0.

The Royals controlled each of the final two sets to close out the sweeps over the Cardinals. Bethel put on an impressive offensive display in the third set, finishing with 16 kills on 33 swings for a .424 hitting percentage. They took the third set in convincing fashion, 25-12, to finish off the sweep.

Tanya Sichling led the Cards in kills with nine kills, followed by Faughnan and Raab who both had six kills. Anna Maria Carella led the way in assists with 11 and Gaby Hernandez-Ferraiuoli was the leader in digs with 13.

MATCH TWO - Gallaudet 3, Catholic 1 (25-14, 17-25, 25-16, 25-18)

After dropping the opening set, the Cardinals played very solid in in the second set coming away with a 25-17 win to pull the match back even. Catholic picked up 12 kills on 34 swings (.265) to help lead them to the set win. Sichling led the way in the set for Catholic with five kills to help pull out the win.

Gallaudet picked up 10 kills in both of the final two sets to pick up the win 3-1. The Cardinals had a negative hitting percentage in each of the final two sets to lead the loss.

Grace Guerin led the offensive attack in the second match for the Cardinals with seven kills which tied with Sichling for the most. Kate Berra led the way in assists with 15 and Hernandez-Ferraiuoli was the digs leader once again with 18. 

Faughnan was named to the All-Tournament team for the Cardinals, being one of eight players of the weekend named to the team.

The Cardinals return home this upcoming Friday when they take on the Warriors of Lycoming. The match is set to start at 6 pm at Franny Murray Court.
