GETTYSBURG, PA. — The Catholic volleyball team once again hit the road on Wednesday, traveling up to Pennsylvania to take on a talented 12-1 Gettysburg team. After the Cardinals took a highly-competitive first set, the Bullets continued their impressive start to the season and won three straight sets in convincing fashion to take the match, 3-1.
Catholic put together a late rally in the opening set to battle back and get out to a 1-0 lead taking the set 26-24. The Cardinals found themselves trailing 23-18 after back-to-back volleys going to the Bullets. Catholic responded by going on a 6-1 scoring run to get out to a 24-23 lead.
Erin Faughnan started the run off with a kill and then
Gaby Hernandez-Ferraiuoli was strong in service picking up two aces, with
Grace Guerin adding a kill as well. The Cardinals finished with seven aces as a team on the night. After a Gettysburg service error gave Catholic the advantage,
Anna Maria Carella stepped behind the service line and delivered an ace of her own to close out the set.
After splitting the first 10 volleys of the second set, the Bullets offense started to find its footing and wound up cruising to a 25-15 win in set two to pull back even. Alycen Radolovic led the offensive charge in the set for the Bullets with six kills.
For the remainder of the two sets, Gettysburg's offense had its way and finished off a 3-1 win for the Bullets. In the third set, the Bullets racked up 15 kills on only three attacking errors (.400) and added 15 more kills with only two errors (.394) to close out the win.
Ava Borcky had a strong showing in the third set for the Cardinals with five kills.
Faughnan led the attack for the Cardinals on the night with a season-high 12 kills on 26 swings (.423), followed by
Mariana Roman Cruz who had eight kills.
Kate Berra finished with a double-double with 12 assists and 10 digs which was her seventh of the season. Hernandez-Ferraiuoli was the leader in digs with 22. Guerin moved into sole possession of second place all-time in program history in block assists, now sitting with 199 for her career.
Catholic plays in a gauntlet of matches coming up this weekend at the Worthington Classic, hosted by Gallaudet, where the Cardinals will play in two matches on Friday and Saturday. The Cardinals open up on Friday against Lynchburg at 5 pm before taking on Marymount (Va.) later in the day.
