Four Goals Push Cardinals to Victory in Conference Opener

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Catholic University field hockey team opened conference play with an outstanding 4-0 victory over Juniata on Saturday afternoon. Nancy McGettigan led the charge with two goals while Allison Flynn and Lauren Keast each added one.

Flynn got the offense going early with a slap shot to the back of the cage three and a half minutes into the game. She gathered a crossing pass in front and sent the ball just inside the left post. This marked the senior's first goal of the season and sixth of her career.

Seven minutes later, McGettigan doubled the Cardinal's lead with her first goal of the season. Keast fired a pass straight to her teammate's stick and the senior helped redirect the ball out of the reach of Eagles' goalkeeper Amanda Puza. McGettigan would add another goal to her totals 30 seconds into the fourth quarter when Catholic earned back-to-back penalty corners and delivered on the second to put the game away.

Keast continued to fill the stat sheet, adding a goal to her assist on the day. She scored the third goal for the Cardinals well into the second quarter when Emma Shallow found her open near the back post. The Cardinals moved the ball with pace on a penalty corner set and were able to give Keast a clean look at the cage. The sophomore now has three goals and three assists on the year, tying her goal total from a year ago.

This marks the first shutout of the season for the Cardinals. Freshman Ella Bowman got the start in goal for the first time in her career after earning her collegiate debut a game ago. The freshman only saw two shots on goal but handled both with ease to secure the big win.

The Cardinals outperformed the Eagles in each offensive statistical category including shots (18-2), shots on goal (15-2), and penalty corners (16-3). They also played a clean game, avoiding any cards while Juniata was awarded one green card in the contest.

Catholic returns to non-conference action when they host No. 2 Salisbury on Wednesday, September 25 at 6 p.m.
