WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic University women's tennis team opened the 2024 fall season with two victories at home. The Cardinals took down Stevenson 5-2 in the morning before gaining another win against Penn State Harrisburg by the same score.
MATCH 1 - Catholic 5, Stevenson 2
The Cardinal won one match in doubles play to start the day.
Samantha D'Addezio and
Ava Kaloustian found their rhythm early and kept the momentum going to come out with a 6-2 victory at the number two spot. Stevenson took the other two matches to take a one-point lead into singles play.
Meaghan Laniewski earned the first point of the contest for the Cardinals with a quick win at number three singles. She only allowed her opponent two games, finishing with set scores of 6-1, 6-1.
Shloka Tambat made her collegiate debut playing at number one singles. The freshman fought off a strong comeback effort from her opponent to win 6-2, 7-5.
D'Addezio, Kaloustian and
Alyson Morris finished the match with three wins in comfortable fashion. D'Addezio took down her opponent 6-3, 6-4 while Kaloustian recorded a 6-3, 6-2 match and Morris finished both her sets 6-3.
MATCH 2 - Catholic 5, Penn State Harrisburg 2
Catholic opened their second match of the day winning the first four available points to clinch the match in style.
In doubles action, the Cardinals won all three matches to earn the opening point. Tambat and
Ella Knox won 6-1 at number one.
Paige Brightwell and Laniewski recorded the same score at number three.
Mairead O'Hara and
Ava Niggemeier rounded out the parings with a 6-3 victory.
Tambat continued her winning ways with a dominant 6-3, 6-3 win at number one singles. She found herself ahead 4-3 in both sets and was able to place crucial points down the stretch to come out victorious. Knox also found success in her first collegiate singles match, winning a third-set tiebreak to extend the team's lead.
Brightwell and Niggemeier put the other two points on the board for Catholic with wins at number five and number six singles. Brightwell won both her sets 6-2 while Niggermeier recorded a 6-3, 6-1 match.
The Cardinals are back on the courts tomorrow as they take on Shephard. The away match is set to start at 2 p.m.
