Cardinals Soar Past Comets



WASHINGTON, D.C.
- Catholic (1-1) picked up its first win of the season, defeating Capital (0-1) 38-20 on Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium. Graduate transfer quarterback Joey Gulbin accounted for four touchdowns in the Cardinal victory. 

Entering the game on the second drive to take over for John Whelan, Gulbin completed 24-36 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns while adding a score on the ground. Gulbin spread the passing touchdowns between Daequan Harvin, Andrew Tabor, and Zach Williams with Williams adding the Cardinals other touchdown on the ground. 

Williams rushed for 71 yards and a score and added two receptions for 11 yards and a second touchdown in the game. Harvin ran for 50 yards and added three receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown to total 119 yards from scrimmage. Tabor caught two passes for 35 yards and a score for Catholic. 

Captains Malachi Hansen and Anthony Giordano were focal points of the passing game for Catholic with Hansen leading the team with 94 yards on six catches while Giordano grabbed a game-high eight passes for 55 yards. 

The Catholic defense held Capital to just 21 rushing yards on 22 attempts while coming away with two turnovers in the contest. Conor Jennings had six tackles, 3.5 TFLS, 1.5 sacks, and a forced fumble while senior linebacker Carson Henry added seven tackles, 3.0 TFLs, a sack, and an interception. Tyler McVicker recovered a fumble and registered his first career sack and Michael Hopkins had 2.5 TFLs and 0.5 sacks for Catholic. 

Capital took an early lead in the contest, taking the ball 92 yards on eight plays with Ben Owens finding Simon Smith for a two-yard score. 

After stopping Capital on fourth down, the Cardinals answered with their first score of the game with three minutes remaining in the first quarter. On third-and-three from the Catholic 38, Gulbin found Harvin on a short screen. Harvin eluded the defense, taking it 62 yards for a score to tie the contest at 7-7. 

The Catholic defense held the Comets in check in the second quarter, taking a 14-7 lead late in the second quarter. Taking over on their own 20 with 7:48 to go, Catholic took the ball 80 yards across 11 plays with Gulbin finding Tabor for a 17-yard score. Tabor had all 35 of his yards on the drive, catching an 18-yard pass on third-and-four from the Catholic 37. 

With 19 seconds left in the half, Jennings forced an Owens fumble, recovered by McVicker at the Capital 29. Gulbin hit Hansen down the left sideline for 28 yards before sneaking it in himself for a 21-7 Cardinal lead. 

Taking over possession with 3:21 left in the third and a 21-14 lead, Catholic set up Connor Gill to nail a 43-yard field goal, extending the lead to two scores. 

The lead remained 24-14 when Catholic took back over with 8:08 to play in regulation. After a nine-yard gain for Harvin on first down, Williams busted out a 59-yard touchdown run to put the Cardinals ahead by 17. Henry intercepted Owens on the second play of the ensuing drive and Williams scored qgain three plays later on a three-yard dump off from Gulbin. 

Catholic hosts SUNY Morrisville next weekend for its Cardinal Weekend contest.
