HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Catholic softball secured a massive sweep of Juniata on Saturday to grab the number two seed in next weekend's Landmark Conference Tournament. The Cardinals finish the regular season with 27 wins, matching 2017 for the most in program history.
Game 1 - Catholic 6, Juniata 1
Catholic smacked five extra-base hits and racked up 12 total knocks in a 6-1 victory over Juniata in game one on Saturday morning. Katie Scolese doubled and tripled for Catholic while Toni Ruley, Sam Grillo, and Alex Garza all added extra-base hits.
Alex Pley was dominant in the circle, earning her 11th win of the season with a complete game. She allowed five hits and struck out three.
Leading 2-0 in the second inning after scoring via error and RBI ground out, Ruley tripled to score Grillo who reached on a double. Garza would then drive in Ruley with a sacrifice fly to give Catholic an early 4-0 lead.
Amy Gastright led off the third inning with a single to left, scoring as Scolese added an RBI triple to the score sheet.
Juniata scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth as C. Thomas homered to lead off the inning, but Pley locked in to retire nine of the next 11 batters.
Catholic added an insurance run in the seventh inning as Sophia Fike singled and swiped second. She advanced on a fly-out before scoring on a Kerri Hatcliffe RBI single.
Game 2 - Catholic 3, Juniata 1
Aubrynn Arcement matched Pley in game two, tossing a complete game, allowing just one run, and earning her 11th win of the season. The sophomore struck out three and scattered just five hits as she helped pitch Catholic to victory, securing the number two seed in the conference.
Gastright drove in all three runs, starting things off early with a two-run double in the first to score
Mia Szap and Fike before adding an RBI ground out in the fifth inning.
Garza and Szap had multi-hit games with Szap adding her seventh double of the season in the contest.
With a hit in each game, Fike set a new program record for hits in a season with 57. She also swiped her team-leading 17th base of the season.
