Murphy's Sixth Inning Single Leads Catholic to Victory over Juniata

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - A two-run Kaitlyn Murphy single in the top of the sixth inning propelled Catholic to a 3-1 victory in the opening round of the Landmark Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon. 

After rain postponed Friday's contests, the Cardinals and the Eagles of Juniata started their tournament runs at 12 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. 

In a pitcher's duel that saw the game sit at 1-1 through five innings, it was Murphy's big hit that pushed Catholic forward into the winner's bracket. Katie Scolese doubled to lead off the inning, moving to third on a Sam Grillo single. Murphy would lace one into the outfield, scoring both Scolese and Grillo to push the Cardinals ahead 3-1. 

Alex Pley was the winning pitcher, allowing nine hits but just one run as she went the distance to pick up her 12th win this season. Pley struck out four in the victory. 

Scolese was the lone player with multiple hits for Catholic while Murphy reached twice, adding a walk. Alex Garza doubled for Catholic, joining Scolese as the lone players with an extra-base hit for Catholic. Amanda Gomez and Toni Ruley stole bases for the Cardinals in the win.

The Cardinals are underway in game two of the day as they take on Moravian in the winner's bracket.
