Cards Sweep Rangers in Landmark Doubleheader

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic baseball got back on track with a doubleheader sweep of Drew on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals improved to 15-7 on the season and 7-4 in Landmark Conference play.

Game 1 - Catholic 11, Drew 0

Catholic baseball scored nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings on its way to an 11-0 defeat of Drew in game one of Saturday's twin bill.

The Cardinals put runners on base early and often, totaling 10 hits and six walks in the victory. Steve Thomas, Logan Eilbacher, and Jack Elwell all had multi-hit games for Catholic while Thomas, Eilbacher, Mitchel Johnson, and Matt Perlin all scored a pair of runs.

Outstanding all season, Roman Tozzi compiled his most impressive outing yet, throwing a seven-inning shutout while allowing just two hits. Tozzi struck out four and rolled through the Drew lineup, allowing just four base runners in the contest. The sophomore improves to 5-0 on the season as he has allowed just six earned runs in 32.1 innings pitched (1.67 ERA).

Catholic started the scoring in the second inning, pushing two runs across against Drew starter Justin Bonito. All the damage in the inning came with two outs as Sammy Burman kicked things off with a two-out double to right. Elwell singled to drive in Burman before swiping second and moving up to third on a throwing error. Bonito hit Perlin with a pitch to turn it back over to the top of the order where Thomas was ready to deliver an RBI single, making it 2-0.

Bonito shut down Catholic in the third, but a four-run fourth started to break the game open and forced the Drew starter from the contest. Perlin roped a one-out double before Thomas came through again, driving in the freshman with a double of his own. Zach Burton drew a walk and Johnson was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Eilbacher. Bonito hit Eilbacher with a 3-2 pitch, driving in Thomas to make the score 4-0. Jesse Lacefield hit into a fielder's choice, wiping Burton off the bases and giving the Rangers two outs, but Derek Zelesnick came through with a two-run single to make it 6-0 and force Drew to go to the bullpen.

After another quick inning from Tozzi, Catholic was back at it with the bats, scoring five runs in the fifth to extend its lead to 11-0. Johnson drew a bases loaded walk to make the lead seven runs for the Cardinals before Eilbacher brought in two with a double to left center. Lacefield pushed home two more with a single through the right side to make it 11-0.

Thomas now has a hit in 17 of his last 18 games and makes it three straight contests with a multi-hit game. He has seven hits in his last 11 at-bats across those three games while reaching seven doubles on the year, good for second on the team.

Game 2 - Catholic 5, Drew 2

The pitching continued to dominate for Catholic in game two as Danny Fitzgerald and Cormac Terry combined to allow just five hits while striking out 10. Fitzgerald earned the win, allowing just one run in 5.0 innings while Terry nabbed a 4.0 inning save, surpassing 100 career strikeouts as he punched out five while allowing just one hit.

Eilbacher completed a career day at the plate, adding three more hits and two RBI. Eilbacher tripled and left the yard for the second time in his career during the win. Eilbacher was the only Cardinal with multiple hits in game two while Burton and Zelesnick joined him with RBI in the contest.

Eilbacher ripped a two-run shot in the first inning of the game, scoring Johnson who drew a two-out walk. Drew cut the deficit in half in the fourth inning with an RBI single, but that is all Fitzgerald would allow in his five frames.

The Cardinals manufactured another two-out run in the bottom of the fifth, pushing the lead to 3-1. Perlin singled and moved into scoring position when Thomas was hit by a pitch. Burton laced his ninth double of the season to score Perlin.

Eilbacher led off the sixth with a triple to center, pushing Drew starter Matt Colucci from the contest. Zelesnick drove in the fourth run of the game with an RBI single up the middle with one away.

The Cardinals and Rangers each added another run in the eighth and ninth respectively as Catholic closed out a 5-2 victory.

Catholic has now won 12 straight against the Rangers dating back to 2019. The teams will finish up the three-game set tomorrow at 12 p.m.
