WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic right-hander
Cody Bosak pitched the game of his life, tossing a complete game shutout against the Drew Rangers as the Cardinals closed out a series sweep with a 5-0 victory this afternoon.
Bosak went the distance, allowing just two hits and walking two batters while striking out 14 Ranger batters. The junior became the second Catholic pitcher to surpass 100 career strikeouts this weekend as he now sits with 105 in 102.2 career innings. Bosak has struck out 28 batters in just 19.1 innings in 2024.
Offensively, Catholic totaled nine hits with
Steve Thomas,
Mitchel Johnson, and
Logan Eilbacher combining for seven of them. Thomas led the way with three, giving him three three-hit games and 11 multi-hit games this season. Eilbacher capped off a career weekend with his second home run of the weekend and third of the season. The freshman is red hot as of late, raising his average to .364 as he rides a seven-game hitting streak. Eilbacher has multiple hits in four straight contests and has driven in 10 runs during his hit streak.
Eilbacher's second home run of the weekend came in the bottom of the second inning as Catholic took an early lead. The Cardinals would go on to score one run in five straight innings while Bosak continued to cruise through Drew's lineup.
In the third inning,
Jack Elwell led off with a double to left before eventually scoring on a passed ball to push the lead to 2-0. In the fourth, it was Elwell picking up the RBI as he drove in
Derek Zelesnick who reached on an error to start the inning. Zelesnick moved up to third on a
Matt Perlin single, allowing Elwell to drive him in with a sacrifice fly.
Catholic manufactured another run in the fifth to knock Aidan Bauer out of the contest.
Zach Burton led the inning off with a walk followed by a Johnson single. Eilbacher picked up a single to load the bases before
Jesse Lacefield picked up an RBI with a hit by pitch to bring in a run. Kenny Yonker entered the game with the bags full and nobody out, but Johnson left early on a would-be Zelesnick sacrifice fly, giving the Rangers two outs. Yonker retired
Sammy Burman to keep the deficit at 4-0.
Johnson added the final run of the day with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. He brought in Thomas who singled with two outs earlier in the inning and advanced into scoring position on a failed pick-off attempt.
Bosak retired eight straight batters before issuing a two-out walk in the ninth, but he induced a ground out to close out the complete game shutout. Bosak's 14 strikeouts are the most by a Catholic pitcher since
Tucker Alch fanned 14 at Scranton on April 24, 2022.
Catholic returns to action on Tuesday versus No. 25 Arcadia at Talbot Field.
