WASHINGTON, D.C. — After a one-hour pregame lightning delay, Catholic dropped a Landmark Conference contest to Susquehanna, 13-10, on Wednesday evening.
The match-up was tight throughout. Neither team led by more than two goals until Catholic utilized a 4-0 run in a strong third quarter to take a 10-7 lead into the final stanza. It was the River Hawks, however, who produced a near-flawless final frame, outscoring the Cardinals 6-0 to claim the victory.
The teams traded goals throughout the opening half. After Susquehanna went up 2-0 early, Brady McMahon and Victor Rosado pulled the Cardinals level. Steven Dezelic joined Rosado and McMahon on the scoresheet in the second stanza as Susquehanna took a 6-5 advantage into halftime.
John Hadden netted two goals in the third quarter with his second tally sparking the Cardinal run. Dezelic, Ian McKinley and Mike Mulligan pitched in with goals that saw Peter Donley's team produce the 4-0 spurt in less than six minutes of game time to close out the third.
Landmark-Conference-leading goalscorer Brennan Lorence was key to Susquehanna's impressive final quarter, netting four of the six River Hawk goals in the frame. He finished with the game with seven total goals to push his season total to 37.
McKinley's goal marked the first of his collegiate career while Sam Pikul showed well for himself on the defensive end, causing two turnovers and scooping up four ground balls. Ryan Macksoud had another successful day at the face-off X, going 16-of-26 (61.5%).
With the victory, Susquehanna moves to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in Landmark Conference play while Catholic takes its first conference loss. The Cardinals will look to respond as they begin a three-game road trip on Saturday with a battle at Scranton. Opening face-off against the Royals is set for 2 p.m.
