Cards Fall to Greyhounds, Set to Travel for Landmark Conference First Round

College Park, MD — The Catholic University tennis team concluded the regular season with 2-5 loss to Moravian on Saturday afternoon. The Conference match was moved indoors to the Junior Tennis Champions Center due to rainy weather in D.C.

The Cardinals picked up a doubles and a singles win against one of the top teams in the Landmark Conference. Before postseason play, they sit at 10-11 overall and 5-4 in the conference.

Ava Niggemeier played a part in both of Catholic's wins, coming out victorious at No.1 doubles and No. 5 singles. The freshman concluded her rookie season with 12 singles and nine doubles wins.

In her singles match, Niggemeier only allowed one game. She dominated the court to win in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. Mairead O'Hara joined Niggemeier at No. 1 doubles for a massive performance at the top spot. The pair, who constantly played together all season, had their best match of the season according to Head Coach Nate Farrlow. The duo started out down 0-3, but climbed back to break their opponents in deuce and clinch the match 8-6

At No. 3 doubles, Marissa Stambaugh and Jane Krukiel saw themselves in a back-and-forth battle until the very end. The graduating duo combined to snaged five sets before eventually falling 5-8.

Meaghan Laniewski and Paige Brightwell had identical first sets at No. 2 and No. 4 singles respectively. They each lost 6-7 in close tiebreaks before play was ended due to a clinch by Morvian.

With the results today, Catholic has earned the fifth seed in the Landmark Conference Tournament. A three-way tie for second between Moravian, Goucher, and Scranton who all finished with 7-2 records was broken using tie breaking procedures. Drew earned the top-spot outright at 9-0 while Moravian took second followed by Scranton, and then Goucher. Catholic and Wilkes rounded out the pack.

The Cardinals will travel to Goucher on Tuesday, April 30 for the first round of the Landmark Conference Championships.
