TOWSON, Md. — The Catholic University women's tennis team fell to Goucher in the first round of the Landmark Conference Tournament on Tuesday afternoon. The Cardinals conclude their season with 10 wins, meeting the 10-win threshold for the first time in six seasons.
The Cardinals struggled to get anything going, falling behind 2-0 quickly after losses at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Catholic's No. 2 doubles pair of Meaghan Laniewski/Paige Brightwell were locked in a battle that went the distance all the way to a tiebreak. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Laniewski and Brightwell were unable to come through the breaker, leaving Catholic in a large hole heading into singles play.Â
Jane Krukiel faced tough opposition at No. 1 singles, falling to Natalia Navarro 1-6, 1-6 while Brightwell could not make any advances at No. 4 and eventually succumbed. The match was halted since Catholic could no longer reach the necessary match score, sending Goucher into the semifinals by a score of 5-0.
Mairead O'Hara had taken her first set at No. 3 singles by a break when the match was stopped. Ava Niggemeier and Marissa Stambaugh had each dropped a tight opening set at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively while Laniewski was on serve in the second set at the time of completion.
Catholic's successful season comes to an end after the Cardinals qualified for the postseason for the first time since 2020-21.
