WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University women's tennis team celebrated its seniors with a comfortable victory over Lycoming on Saturday afternoon.
The team honored seniors Marissa Stambaugh and Gabriella Villaplana as well as graduate student Jane Krukiel prior to the match, and all three stepped up with victories on the court. Villaplana grabbed a singles win at No. 6 while Stambaugh and Krukiel combined for an 8-2 triumph at No. 3 doubles. Krukiel won both of her matches on the day, defeating her challenger without conceding a game at the top singles position.
Ava Niggemeier and Mairead O'Hara took home a comfortable win at the top doubles position, only dropping a single game to their challengers. Meaghan Laniewski and Paige Brightwell continued Catholic's dominance on the doubles courts as the Cardinals only dropped five doubles games all day.
Niggemeier showed toughness at No. 4 singles to come through a real battle. After taking the opening set by a break, her challenger battled back to force a third-set tiebreak in which Niggemeier triumphed, 10-4.
With the victory, the Cardinals clinched a winning record in conference play for the first time since 2021. Having already secured a postseason berth, Nate Farlow's team hopes to win a Landmark Conference Tournament match for the first time since that same season.
Catholic's regular-season finale is set for next Saturday against Moravain. The Cardinals will travel to Bethlehem, Pa., for a 1 p.m. start in a match could impact postseason seeding.
