Cardinals Win at No.1 Singles and Doubles in Match Against Goucher

Baltimore, MD – The Catholic University men's tennis team won at No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles but ultimately dropped a Landmark Conference match against Goucher on Thursday afternoon. The final score saw the Cardinals fall 2-7.

James Earwood and Diego Romo put the first points on the board for the Cardinals at No. 1 doubles. The pair has been playing together consistently throughout the season and found their stride again today. After a back-and-forth battle led to a tiebreak, the duo came away with a 8-6 victory.

No. 2 doubles saw Tycho Janssen and Ben Perks create a competitive match after staring off slow. The pair was down 1-7 early but cut the deficit quickly by winning four straight games before falling 8-5.

Janssen picked up the second win for the Cardinals at No. 1 singles. He split sets with his opponent, winning the first and dropping the second, to force third set tiebreak. In the deciding frame, points were exchanged evenly on both sides. The final set was even at seven all before Janssen went up 9-7. His opponent evened things again at 9-9 but Janssen won the final two points to secure the hard fought win.

A series of close matches followed in which the Cardinals stayed competitive until the end. Earwood forced a second set tiebreak at No. 2 singles. He climbed back and had a set point at 7-6 but was able to complete the comeback. Romo also fought from behind and forced a tiebreak at No. 3 singles. He ended with set scores of 4-6, 6-7. Henry Ogden turned thing around quickly after not winning a game in his first set to win four games in the second. He recorded scores of 0-6, 4-6.

The Cardinals will return a home for a Saturday contest against Lycoming on April 20. The match is slated to start at 1 p.m.
