Catholic Defeats Susquehanna 7-2 at Home

WASHINGTON, D.C – The Catholic University men's tennis team won its fifth Landmark Conference contest of the season with a 7-2 victory over Susquehanna on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals dominated throughout the day, combining to win two doubles and five singles matches.

James Earwood and Diego Romo captured an early lead for the Cardinals with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles. Susquehanna was able to take No. 2 doubles to even the score but Catholic charged ahead again with a win at the No. 3 spot.

The No. 3 doubles pair of Charlie Robbins and Nathaniel Barish had a thrilling match. They were up 5-2 before allowing their opponents to climb back and force a tiebreak. The duo executed perfectly when it mattered, winning the tiebreak to take a 2-1 match lead.

Earwood took care of business again on the singles side with 6-4, 6-1 victories in the No. 1 spot. Romo and Robbins followed with additional wins of their own. Romo recorded a shutout in his first set before taking a 6-4 victory in set two at No. 2 singles. Robbins clinched the match with a hard-fought victory at No. 3 singles. He was down 5-4 in the first set, but remained focused and won the next three games for a final set score of 7-5. The second set was another battle before Robbins came out on top, 6-4.

Barish's match at No. 6 singles went to three sets. He won the first set 6-4 but traded scores with his opponent in the second for a 6-4 loss. The deciding frame saw Barish go up 9-6 before closing things out with a 10-8 win.

With the victory today, the Cardinals remain undefeated at home throughout the 2023-24 season. They will host two more matches in D.C. to try and keep the streak alive.

Catholic will travel to Goucher on Thursday, April 28 for its next contest. The mid-week match will start at 3:30 p.m.
